Had a jammed starter rope on the Powertorque so dissassembled the unit, spring was slighly bent at end so straightened that out, unit now works fine outside of the mower but once I install it over the crankcase I don't get the required amount of tension pulling it back, it sort of limps along and if I pull on the rope it retracts back a little at a time. Spring looks fine to me but could it have lost some tension when it was jammed or is there anything else I should check. Saw Joe's video on youtube about winding the rope back, excellent video by the way Rewind pull cord , at one point he says that if the mechanism doesn't pull back strongly you may need a second hand unit, mine looks ok but are there other things I've overlooked?

Photo of the spring mechanism, there's a small kink or two, can't get it to work so assume I need to get another one? [Linked Image]

Hello Tiger,
Something I have done before, is not route the cord though its eyelet correctly.
Is it the wire type eyelet?
This causes the rope to catch.

Hi Mark,

Have changed the rope and I think it has fed correctly, part of the spring mechanism keeps popping out, you can actually here it pop out slightly and then you have to take it apart again and re-seat it.

Tiger, you need to close the loop on the spring where it catches the starter as it is too wide. Do it carefully otherwise the spring may snap at the point where it loops into a U shape. I'd say that is your reason the spring is always unlatching.

Dont forget to install the friction spring otherwise the starter wont throw out correctly.

I'm sure Bigted will add some additional comments.

G'day Jaffa, actually had the loop a little narrower than what's in the photo, I'll bend it a bit more and see what happens, thanks. I thought the small kinks and the fact that the spring wants to lift from its coiled position might be to blame.

tiger, I just had a closer look at your stater image.
Yes, as Jaffa said, should look more like this one below.

Thanks Mark, i've reshaped it, it doesnt look as good as yours, it retracts but i cant get full tension with it, also when it reaches the end of the rope sometimes it wont retract at all.
