Hi, Just a question. Will these modern carbys work as a suitable replacement for G3 carby on a 1970s Victa Mayfair? Any issues with them? They seem to specify G4 not G3, so I thought I should ask before purchasing one.

The answer is yes and no. I have done quite a few of these mods but you have to get a plastic manifold off either a later full crank that has the plastic manifold fitted, I have never tried to see if that manifold will fit without modification somehow, or as I normally do take a manifold off a PT motor and the turn it out to fit the round manifold spigot where the G3 was fitted. Easy if you have a lathe. The first one I did a number of years ago I turned a piece of 1/2 inch pipe and fitted it into the plastic manifold and then used a piece of fire hose to fit it on the round spigot on the barrel. This I fitted on a 24 slasher belonging to a mate who is very rough on all his equipment and it has never missed a beat, except he straight fueled it last year. Gave it a hone and new set of rings and good as new again. So the answer is yes they can be fitted and they work fine but it does take a bit of work

One other thing is you need to do is remove the little tube that is for the decomp hose, it pulls out with a wriggle with a pair of pliers. If you go the bore the manifold to fit the spigot, (this way it looks factory) then you have to be very careful as the o/d of the spigot is close to the max you can take out of the manifold. I make them a snug fit and put a smear of JB Weld to hold it in place. With the decomp hole I drill a bit of a countersink in the top and fill it with JB Weld as well
Another thing, don't buy a new carby, just look around and you should be able to pick up an old PT on the side of the road or get one from a tip shop. This way you get a manifold and snorkel as well because you are going to need these bits

Thanks Norm, I pulled my Mayfair down recently and the only thing wrong with the existing G3 carby is that the little gear has a crack in it. I could try carefully gluing it I guess. They do not seem to be available any longer, which is a shame. If anybody has one, please let me know. It will save me having to buy a new carby. Yes, the G3 carb parts dried up a couple of years ago. I think it was GA Spares and they just got rid of what they still had on the shelf. Somebody probably picked them up for a song
