Bummer when that happens, I just spent most of today getting a wheel off the rear axle on a small Greenfield and I was working on it up on the bench. If it had broken I would have binned the mower and just sold the motor. Too hard, too difficult and too costly for me to try getting another wheel. Hope you can find one

So did you get the hub center off after all that? if not best method would be to split it with a cold chisel with it sitting on something really solid. The chisel will expand it. You could also run a grinder cut lengthways, then start with the chisel

Yeah got it off with no more problems, it was either a bad cast or metal fatigue that caused the problem it would have ended this way no matter how I tried to get it off, that other colt 5 I looked at the guy told me about an old guy who specializes in colt 5's not far from me ,but I forgot his address ,no problem, went to google earth and started hunting I new the area and what the beginning of street name was plus it was near the high school and there was only 1 in that area so didn't take long to find him, popped round on Monday and he had a look at the hub and said yep metal fatigue ,he then gave me a pulley and he has a hub which he is going to get off one of his colt5 's he has as spares. he gave a few suggestions on getting the rest of the axle stripped down so the wheel bearings can be replaced ,use a lot of emery paper, and more emery paper till the axle slides freely so will give it a go I am getting there bit by bit.

Emery paper and penetrene, tedious but satisfying once you get the new bearings fitted

well it turns out I got the whole rear end but the hub was damaged so now I might have to look at maybe trying to get it repaired as it's only aluminium which is why they crack when trying to get them off the shaft. other than that looks like it's stuffed if it can't be repaired.

Looks like a ratty piece of casting there and would be a problem trying to weld it up. How is the wheel attached to the shaft, is it a taper and keyed. Any chance a wheel off another type of mower might fit

![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2016/03/full-9959-27514-rhub1.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2016/03/full-9959-27515-eng1jpg.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2016/03/full-9959-27516-eng1.jpg) shaft is tapered and keyed but actual hub is only realy held in place by the wheel nut so it maybe possible to fit another type of hub well it's an option if I can't get a good hub . and a couple of shots of the new engine not fitted yet will need some small adjustment to the seat,(it's not the correct seat so it's just the2 corners under the seat that need to be cut out a bit so engine can slide in a bit more only a minor issue compared to the hub ,I did speak to a guy in Brisbane a mower wrecker he has a hub and its off the axle but he got a bit shirty because he would have to post up here reckons it'll cost him too much in time to do it.

Bumber about the wrecker, ain't real hard to go to the post office and post something, doesn't even have to wrap it just put a label on it. You have to keep going seeing you have a new motor for it. Greenfield wheel might fit, I can measure one up for you but then you would need 2 and they aren't that easy to get either

well I've had a win the hub it has been is repaired ,they have managed to weld it back together, I will keep looking for another hub to eventually replace it but till then I'll use it as it is .I'll put it on the opposite side and put the good hub on the chain side all that needs to be done now is to get the grub screws out of the axle so the bearings can be replaced non of the Allen keys I have fit them so may have to take to an engineering place to see if they can get them out

They are most likely imperial keys, taking it to some place to get them undone will cost more than a set of keys and then you will still need to tighten them up after replacing the bearings. I also have allen keys that fit my impact driver for really stubborn ones

I've done a bit of ally welding in my time and if the hub has been welded I wouldn't worry too much about replacing it unless it's ugly as sin. As for the grub screw, I reckon you'd be better off spending the money on a set of allen keys rather than paying someone to undo it. You would also have put another tool in your shed. Have you tried a neighbour or a mate? Surely someone can loan you one.

G'day Fixin-it,
Can you tell me pls the tyre size and axle diameter of the wheel in question.
I might (stress might) have one. The photos look remarkably similar to a wheel I have sitting in the shed

They did a very good job on that, corroded, dirty old alloy is not easy to work with

Almost identical to the front wheels on a Rover Rancher except for the keyed hub of course. Same size, same split rim design.

my Cox has those same two piece three bolt rims, a real good idea .The only reason they are cast in alloy is for cost alone.Hub machining would be done in an automatic turret lathe in three movements. That weld repair has been done by a very experienced welder.
