During my endless search for Pace information I found this advertisement from 19 March 1958, it helped me out as i didn't know the first model of pace ever used a re-coil starter. But theirs something else that i find odd! The ad shows some rare types of mower, such as the Carter and the Champion, but one catches my eye! There is a "Minter" in the ad, we know of a Minter with a Simplex 85cc engine, but this one is different, The engine is 3 1/2 horse power and has a re-coil starter, the fuel tank seems to be on the engine. The mower does not seem to have the same double rear wheels of the 1955-1959 version. Perhaps this version was meant to replace the earlier Minter? I am sure Jack would have seen this ad before so this might not be new information.

I only heard of trove the other day from you, haven't made it over there yet....I did however just have a quick look at your "Kyes Mowers" page, quite impressive work there mate, I'll have to go back for a proper look as time permits.

Thanks mate, once I finish the Pace series I will be heading into the more unknown region of Vintage Mowers, I might need Jacks help for some of that laugh

I have found out that this mower was called the Minter De-Luxe, there was also a 15" Minter Junior.

I will come back if I can find any info about the Minter Junior.

It's annoying how in the 'old days' places were known either by name, suburb or street only with no number 'cos everyonenwould knowmwhere things were. Otherwise I could tell you where they used to be and/or what goes on there now and/or when things changed.

Both Lonsdale St, Braddon (Canberra) and North Rocks Rd Parramatta (Sydney) were commercial/light industrial areas.

North Rocks Rd was close to where I grew up. I still occasionally drive up it when I visit Sydney. I assume the factory was 'down the bottom' near where the United Dairies depot was.

Lonsdales St is now a favourite haunt of mine having been redeveloped into a nice cafe/eatery zone.

Hi Kye and slashnburn

Trove is the Australian National Library's digital database.
I have been correcting text there for years, so as to make
searching easier for others. I guess I have corrected about
125,000 lines of text.

Kye, the Minters from the late 1950s have been tagged by me,
and I have created public lists that should show up in Google
searches.

There is a frustration with Trove because of copyright law.
Trove does very well if you search for mowers made prior to
1954. After this it is ad-hoc and there is a dark area in the
late 1950s. For example, last year I discovered that Grasshopper
had survived to the late 1950s as well:-

Trove has just undergone its most significant upgrade in years.
It is now Version 7. There are teething problems for correcting
text at the moment.

A good place to start is here: http://help.nla.gov.au/trove/trove-support-zones
Here is an example - my public list for Pace: http://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=32970

All very interesting.

Bloody hell Jack, 125,000! You've been busy. I realised you are well informed but that's amazing.

Well done Jack, that's a lot of editing and for the public good too. Congratulations! good1

As for the Murray Bros ad, that's cutting (heh, heh) close to home. I remember going there as a kid; my parents bought me toys from there, no doubt other stuff too but toys are all I remember! Westfield Parra made short shrift of them once it opened.

At least the building has survived in a repurposed form. Below is a screen capture from Google Earth of the facade/crest above the main entrance doors, although not in a colour scheme I remember! We seldom went in this way, preferring the more informal (and friendly) entrance 'round the back on Marsden St wink

Hello slashnburn
Yes, this is why I wear socks with sandals, have buck teeth and live at home
with mother. My idea of extreme excitement is going to a milk bar no one
has recommended grin

That's good Kye. It has the major ads I've found so far.

I love old Sydney history Patrick and it's nice to have local perspective.
What a wonderful old store:-

p.s. I just realized how close Murray's was to Champion Mowers,
one of my favourites from the 1950s.

Returning to the Minter topic, I wish we could find some of the
later machines - the 15" and 18" machines.

Cheers

Jack, these days finding a milk bar is just about as hard as finding a Minter mower
