I would unfortunately wager a dead or dying coil. Not an uncommon problem with these unfortunately.

A couple things:

Pull coil, lightly sand magnets, gap properly.

Put the plug gap down to 020 inch. Try a non resistor plug

If you pump the primer as it dies, does it come back? That would indicate carby - but I unfortunately would wager coil

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

I spoke too soon. Having seemed to be working as it should during the test, when it came to doing my next lawn mow, it went back to not have a rev range again. It's clean as far as I can tell, so could something else, maybe something that's a bit worn out that I can't see be the problem? It's not a huge problem really, but it would be nice to sort it out.

Hi Okidoke.

You may have to take the carby off, remove the throttle butterfly in carby throat and remove the rod and clean it up.

Whilst you have it off, I would advise just doing cleaning the carby out at the same time, with new bowl gasket, etc. That way it will remain a reliable mower

Sometimes they have a little felt pad on the top to prevent dust ingress. Remove this with the shaft and soak in petrol to get the dirt out

Ok Tyler. I'll give it another go again soon. Appreciate the advice.

Good luck okidoke.
That Tecumseh is better than a Briggs for sure and that engine really looks good on that base unlike the ungainly looking Briggs.
