Thought this might be useful to someone who has the time or equipment to make it, a diagram in the back of one of my books for a universal mower stand.

I think that design isn't especially convenient to use. It has to be bolted to the floor, and unbolted if you want clear space. The four arms that support the cradle from the single central pole would get in the way considerably when working on the underside of the mower. You would also have to lay on your back to work on the underside, a practice which would get old rather quickly.

It seems to me that stand would be useful for a mower shop that essentially just works on the top of the mower, and probably lays it vertically on its side to service the blades. It would be left permanently set up, and rotated so that the repairer could stand in one place, close to the toolbox. I think I'd personally prefer a simple rectangular frame, on four legs that could be removed for storage. The rectangular frame could be the same as in the drawing - it would just need pieces of Rectangular Hollow Section welded vertically to the four corners, in place of the four support arms that go to the central pole. Four slightly smaller pieces of RHS would be slid into those corner pieces as legs. When finished for the day, you'd pull out the legs and lean the whole thing against a wall somewhere.

I made a table out of angle iron that you can remove the top out of and work underneath it. the front and back wheels of a victavit perfect in the top.

I found it a pain in the ass to use so went back to just tipping them over to work on.

Yes, I think working from underneath isn't very attractive, but having a table that locks the wheels in position so you can bully the mower a bit without it falling on the floor, would be quite a help. If it had a built-in parts shelf, was at just the right working height, and you could walk all the way around it and have spanner room everywhere, the whole deal would be much better than the average work bench.

You could probably invent a bracket to let you lock the mower in position, tilted a bit past the vertical, as well.

Yeah ive got that book with the same diagram but i just sit the mower on a milk crate........spins around on the blade disc just remove the spark plug before doing this......

Over kill for fixing mowers but thats not what i made if for.

I cant squat down for very long, so working on the ground is a pain.
Table is probably a touch low, well it is with my back the way it is at the moment.
Theres a 4" square bit of redgum under the front of the table, i just put that beside the mower and tip it on its side to get underneath. Only had one kiss the concrete so far. Some are a pain to get sitting up on thier side.
Can hang bits on the wheel thing at the front. And also sit the front of mower up on there to tip the motor back to suck the oil out. Or clean the deck and push the mower forward and hook the handle under the wheel track to get at the underside for mowers that cant be tipped because of oil or fuel spills.

Bob, for me it would need a way to keep the mower wheels from moving (either fore and aft or sideways) while working on it. Same with the back wheel of the bike. I would also want a way to secure either bike or mower while leaning either way at a fairly extreme angle. Will it take a 4-wheel bike?

I'm working on an idea of my own, same similar to the diagram, bolted down for stability, but with some way of aiding with working on the underside, maybe an adjustable bench angle and mower lock, or a flip top of some kind.

I like your one Bob, could do with some form of wheel locks, but definatly a nuce set up.

Yeah you guys are right, the mowers do tend to roll a bit. But theres ways around it.

Height up, roll it right back till the wheels drop off and the back of the mower sits up on the yellow channel.

If you want it on the deck of the table just drop it to eat dirt and it wont roll back.


Its not wide enough for a 4 wheeler Grumpy. Its made from 1 and 2/3rds of what i think were inserts for what would be a stormwater/curb pit lids.

Just wide enough for a wide cut push mower. 20" rover, 505 Victa, super 24, MTD bigwheel 23".
