Cyber Jack -you had a discussion going re the mower made by Anglo-Australian Co. The Exceller. I have an old wood working jointer made by the same company and also called the Exceller. I am trying to trace parts for the old Exceller Jointer. Can you tell me what happened to the Anglo-Australian Co. plse? Were they swallowed up by someone else? I am keen to trace any remnants of the company to see if I can get the parts. I have tried to match parts from another company or brand/model without success. Look forward to hearing from you or anyone with advice. Cheers
This is a can of worms, and I will need a few days to review the research I have amassed since my original articles on the Exceller mower appeared.
It's clear that Anglo-Aus's main business was wood working machinery, but they develved into so much more.
The mower was most likely a joint venture with GMF, with no connection with wood-working.
I know a lot more now about the Anglo-Aus Company now. I can tell you what happened to this company - and its life span was over three decades -1950s -1970s.
I also think I know who sold your machine in Queensland. I just need a bit of time ...
Hello Cyber Jack - I have been away for little while. Re the Jointer I am attaching a few photos. The top you can see, but I don't have a photo of the bottom. I have detached the bottom from top. It is belt driven by an electric motor below the piece you can see. So I am attaching the Jointer photo, as well as the damaged cutter block that I need. The cutters and the block are 5 inches - seems there aren't any 5 inch made these days - all 6 inch or more. I can have cutters cut to size without any problems - not the block so easily. If you have any idea if the original manufacturer (Anglo Aust) sold to someone else - may be a current supplier who may have some left overs etc. Also if there was/is a distributor in Qld I can follow up on. Thanks for your good work on Anglo Aust to date. Look forward to your further advice. regards Kieth
I do believe that the Anglo-Australian Engineering Company's first product was the 'Sawmaster'. Here, we are talking about 1953.
They certainly had a Queensland agent in early 1954 - with address as Anglo-Australian Engineering Co. with a Toowong postal address. I would later learn this was an agency: K. Gregory, of 27 Macquarie Street, St. Lucia.
They also appear to have had a Sydney agent in AUS Trade Equipment, of Belmore, Sydney.
The association between Anglo-AUS and the lawnmower probably came about because the original patent applicant - GMF - needed a specialist maker of these goods. GMF was an electric goods maker.
Nonetheless, the Anglo-AUS company appears to have remained a wood tool company, and it was a survivor - with international exports in the 1960s.
By the 1970s it is clear that the company had a niche market, but still had entrepreneurial spirit ...
By the late 1970s, there were clear takeovers. I attach a few records
Hope this helps. ------------------------------ Jack
