I pulled a little Mayfair 2 stroke out from under the house today (can't remember why Max didn't take it when he grabbed a pile of early Victas) Anyway it had a catcher, maybe that was why he left it for me, put some fuel in it and it started second pull and runs like a dream, an absolutely cracking little mower that hopefully somebody will use and appreciate for years to come

It's a 125. What a gem. Who said cheapest had to be nasty at the time these were made? I have one very similar but the height adjuster has been tied off to stay at a fixed height. Funny enough, it is the perfect cutting height for our front lawn. I might do the carby mod on it next Norm.

PS: I just noticed the G3 on it. Is this a mark III motor? They are apparently rare.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

MF,, what carby does it have on it now, this one has a G3, looked after properly this could go on until we run out of petrol to fuel it. But then I hear them talking about building another runway at Tulla airport so they can double the number of take off and landings per hour. We now have the second International airport at Avalon and they are talking about building a third international airport here rumored to be in the south eastern suburbs probably out in the Tooradin area. So much for fuel shortages

Mine has the G4 with grey cap and remote primer. It runs funny like it doesn't get enough fuel flow somehow, yet it does the job. I hope it's not worn rings.

Pulling apart the engine to fit them is the issue. I hate removing the old gasket material.

MF, how do I tell if this is a Mark 111 motor, all I know is it is a little ripper, this is probably 50 years old and would still probably outlast another 50 of the Aldi mowers

If it's a Mark III we're taking 45 years old. Not quite 50.
It will certainly outlast multiple Aldi mowers and many others.

Hey Max, that's the first time I've seen a Mayfair with a matching gold impact starter. I like!!
Was it's original catcher plastic or metal?

Hi MF, not sure how many gold starters I have,I had a quick look and found one spare.

I thought from 1968 the Mayfair had plastic catchers. This Mayfair did not come with it's catcher,I'm sure I have a gold plastic catcher for the mower.

I have two caramel (or baby poo) coloured uncracked catchers to suit. I actually think they work well and hold more clippings than you think. They empty out well.

I had somebody wanting this mower yesterday and I asked why he wanted it "because I want cheap mower" I said that he did not appreciate the heritage of the mower and what it actually was if all he was thinking about was a cheap mower. I want it to go to somebody who will appreciate it for what it is.

G'day Norm, Max, Nowerfreak and all,
I wish I had expressed Norm's view in that language.

The Mayfair was, arguably, Victa's most successful model by
sales volume in the day. Shelf life? About 15 years!

But the Mayfair did live on - in a new guise - as a high-arch job.
It lost its original DNA.

As a Stencil mower, it was widely marketed under various store brands.
I guess hundreds!

I have written about the first Mayfairs, where Victa attempted
to disassociate itself with the brand. Good luck with that!

Later, the Victa Mayfair would appear, alongside the stencil
store branded mowers. Amazing!

This was a mower Victa knew it had to get 'right'.
It did! laugh

Cheers

I honestly wouldn't expect you to do that Norm!! Thank heavens you didn't condemn that classic to a quick death!
