I need to replace the drive belt on my mates Anniversary model up the bush and I need to work out what size belt it is. On the manufacturers plate it says GT 1985, does anybody know how many inches this is in an "A" section belt

Thanks Buckets I have seen that, it gives me the inside measurement, the outside measurement but it doesn't actually give me the actual belt size. I need the belt quickly because I picked the new motor for it today and as soon as I get a belt I will head up the bush with it

I'm sure you have much more experience with mowers than me, but for my own experience could you explain why you can't just buy a GT 1985 or SPA850 belt.

I had to call into my local mower shop this morning for some other stuff and it intrigued me enough to ask about these belts, he said that he had both in stock and were around $20 & $30 bucks respectively.

I also asked about the A section belt and he said that they don't recommend them for this machine, as the V section of the belt (can't remember which)was either too shallow or too deep and prone to slippage.

Again I'm sure you have your reasons but I'm intrigued.

Ended up doing just that buckets, just meant I had to drive to the Greenfield dealer when the bearing joint is just around the corner

I've noticed the general A section belts of the same size don't last long on John Deere mowers compared to the genuine Kevlar John Deere belts. There's a $40 price difference though!

LTR, I put one on my evolution and found I had to tighten it too the second last ratchet slot to get traction, where as the genuine greenfield belt let me with 3 spare slots for future tightening, but again the price difference was similar to yours.

I remember from a million years ago there was a product called "belt grip?" to stop belts from slipping, not sure if it is still available

Yep, it's a CRC aerosol product - bearing services have it, and even SuperCrap Auto list it.

This A section belt came off a John Deere LA115 mower deck. It's interesting how long it lasted in that condition!

I don't think it would last long on a mower deck exposed to all the dirt though.

I fitted a 13hp Chonda in this mower yesterday but I'm in a bit of a pickle as to what to do about a fuel tank. Anybody have any pics of what they have done or any suggestions. I only rant the motor for a minute because the original throttle cable was too short, but what I don't get my head around is the way the throttle works. It is under spring tension which holds the butterfly fully open so what that means is if the throttle cable should break or dislodge the motor will go full throttle? Any thoughts?

Maybe a tank in front of the firewall like a Viking mower? Otherwise, a fuel pump would be required.


The governor spring should hold the throttle butterfly wide open when the motor is stopped. There should also be a slide mechanism that the hand throttle cable connects to in order to regulate the revs. What happens when this motor is running?

It depends if the throttle cable slide boss moves without the cable on. Usually they have some resistance. Depends on how it's all been put together I guess!

If possible a picture of the control mechanism would be helpful. (I presume it's a clone of the Honda GXV390)

Sorry LRT, no pics as it is at my mates place out of Ballarat which is always a problem for anything I have to make for it. The spring tension holding it full throttle is fairly strong, but I was running out of time and it was getting dark and I just wanted to get it fired up before I came back home. I have to make up a petrol tank and lengthen the exhaust manifold pipe so the muffler clears the bonnet. When the motor is running I have to hold the lever where the cable connects to back hard under this spring tension otherwise it will go full throttle. I'm thinking the spring may be somehow connected to the wrong side. I will go back up once I have made up the bits I need and see what I can work out.

Sounds like the governor mechanism has been assembled incorrectly. Some of the Millers Falls Chinese go carts are linked up directly to bypass the governor.

Yes travelling long distances certainly makes it hard sorting out all the little difficulties. Even more so when you realise you've forgotten to pack the part or special tool you need!

Certainly didn't feel like the governor was working, but I didn't have time to really look at it too much but I would say you are on the right track

Hopefully it's got a governor mechanism inside!

Hi Fellas, been a while, haven't been well but you push on. Anyway back to this Anniversary model, motor is running well but my mate says that when he has the cutter deck in the lower positions it cuts much better in reverse than in forward motion. Before I head up there does anybody have any idea as to what could be causing this. Without looking at it I'm a bit stumped as to a cause.

Can anybody tell me if the cutter belt adjuster on the Anniversary is the same as the 5XL, using the right hand rear pulley as the adjuster. My problem is this mower is a 3 hour drive away and I'm having trouble explaining it to my mate. The next issue is the belt he has taken off it is 2 inches shorter that the one listed for the Anniversary but this is still too long. My problem is that for the shorter belt to have been operating fine previously then some previous owner must have altered something. Is there adjustment on the rear right hand pulley as it is on the 5XL?
