Hi I'm trying to get my qualcast with a villiers 4G motor going.
It is fitted with a Junior carburettor which is from the 5G.This is how I purchased it and was assurred that it used to work.
It had weak then no spark which was traced to a faulty coil which I replaced with a spare I fortunately had.
It now has spark and fires occasionally when rotated with a drill but never quit gets going and stops.
It has some compression and The points are clean and set to the proper gap.
I have tried a new plug.
Could it be the condenser or perhaps the points still ?
Does anyone have any other ideas on what stops these motors running? They seem very simple.I have cleaned up the carb and it's getting fuel through the tickler as well.
I'm running out of ideas...... [Linked Image]

thanks
Mike

How steady is the spark, does it fire on every rotation, if so spark should be ok so that leaves fuel, try a squirt of starter fluid in through the carby, lift the slide so it can pass through the carb, not a lot just a small squirt, give it a quick pull with the throttle open and see if it tries to run, if so you now it is a fueling issue

make sure timing set good flywheel have no key way leave flywheel nut loose so you can move flywheel take out sparkplug use long screwdriver to touch piston top dead (tdc) centre once you find tdc move crank shaft to move piston (anty clockwise) down 2mm before tdc you should have aleady set point gap now with piston 2mm before tdc turn flywheel to make points just to start open now tighten nut for flywheel
may be when you change coil you not time it proply cheers2

Thanks Freebird and NormK
The spark seems OK to me but I agree it could seem like a timing problem but it does have a key so timing would be fixed. Is there any other way to adjust the timing if the fly wheel is keyed ?It says in the manual that timing is set at the "works" but I wonder how ?
BTW what are the symptoms of a faulty condenser ?
thanks
M

Bad condenser and you won't get spark and you have spark. Test the condenser if you want, should get something like 4kohms, 0 ohms, condenser is bad

sorry mikloooo if it have key timing fixed is good
have you cleand points if burnt spark not strong take points out clean contacts with points file if not have points file use a very fine file make both contacts flat smooth shiny put back in set point gap to correct size fly wheel keyed timing is factory set
clean spark plug before putting plug back squirt two stroke fuel down plug hole refit plug motor should now run at least for short burst or keep running
if it wont fire is coil or condencer falt early villers engines always had ploblems with faulty coil
I used to have lots of nos coils condencer but now all sold
maybe coil can be rewound with condencer you can fit one from different engine with close to same value if condencer different shape wont fit in flywheel you can mount condencer out side to engine somewhere wink

mikoooo those old coils always go bad 15 yearys ago it cost around $80 to rewind
if you serch internet you can find coil winder there are couple in vic you should find someone in nsw but it wont be cheap
may be you can find old mower shop near you some are horder and may have coils or complete engine you can buy cheap.
some one on outdoorking is cleaning out a mower shop lot of old stuff he may find a coil or motor he wants to sell it all
you have to find his post or may be some one on hear lead you to it
I replaced many of those coils
I used to work on early model motors than yours with kick start when running very good simple motor 1940s 50s design piston lump heavy cast iron
keep trying you fix it soon wink

Here are contact details for a few rewinders who handle magneto restoration stuff. I haven't dealt with any of them personally, so can't comment on their service.

There is one mob in the UK who have a couple of cheap Villiers coil types, but I dunno if they list yours. They also have the Villiers condensers.

Some measurements of your coil would be helpful - core and body, diameter and length.
