Trev, I figured this was about as close as one could get to owning that steam mower

Yes,
this one is a YR60 Master Mower.
It has the optional 18hp twin cylinder TJD Wisconsin.
I think this one dates from the late 1970s or early 1980s.

I know these machines pretty well and they sold in volume
to councils and golf clubs. They had two in-line multiplate clutches
in a transaxle that gave instant forward and reverse.

These were well-liked and fun to drive!

Vertically mounted spark plugs. So, it's a Hemi then?

Now that's a selling point! V twin Hemi!!

I did see a 318 rebadged as a 360 in a ride on at a car show once. Hmmmm.........Now that's food for thought!

NormK, mine is not in such good condition but the only part missing is the front belt guard on the engine.

Just Stumbled across this old post. I know this machine well. I believe my father bought it from the Nestles factory in Maffra when it closed down and then fixed it up and proceeded to use to mow the garden that had heaps of trees to get around. When my parents decided to sell they left the mower behind. I think dad paid $150 for it and the woman that bought the house was trying to flog it off for $4500! I did ring to see if it was a typo but no that's what she wanted. I have its workshop book still though.
The house in the background was pretty well built by Dad by himself with the odd help from mates. The window behind the seat was my Bedroom as a child. The woman who bought the property was trying to sell it for 3 times as much within a year....

Hello Lyndon J
What a fantastic story and provenance to this machine!

These were great machines in the day - with good sales in Australia
to sporting, commercial and municipal bodies.

This particular machine was a YR60 but fitted with the larger engine.
This is an earlier machine with all-belt transmission - one belt to
the transaxle; and matched set of belts to the cutter deck. Later
machines would have shaft drive to the deck.

Folks loved that these machines had a turn radius equal to their width,
and that they had a clever Rockford clutch - essentially two sets
of multi-plate clutches on the same shaft - one forward; one reverse. No clutching.

Many thanks.

It's funny you should say that, prd ...

The machine (above) would date from the mid-to-late 1970s.
Note the weights over the rear wheel.

Earlier machines had no rear weights.
It was possible (for a novice) to reverse too quickly.
In such cases the machine would want to flip forward so that
the operator would be looking down on the cutter deck!
I suspect Yazoo had shares in underwear companies.

Later machines would add not only weights, but a lock bar
preventing dangerous tip-ups.

Note that the lift assist spring is missing on the machine (above).
This assisted the lifting of the cutter deck (for transport).
In experienced hands, these were great fun to ride and to watch from the sideline.
