My old Poulan 306A runs ok until it gets hot. After hot it quickly dies out after started and needs choke to keep it running. I also have a 245A which runs very good until it runs out of gas. After refillng, it is very difficult to start and doesn't even fire. It acts as if it is flooded. I heard the coils on these older models sometimes quit working when hot. Any suggestions on my problems. I have a new stihl which I use for general purpose, but use these old saws on my chainsaw mill.
Thanks in advance.

on the 306 I would change the fuel line, most common problem that caues this problem is the plastic in the line as it ages, tends to collapse, on the 245, just check for fire at the plug when it refuses to fire, and go from there.

Good advice Bill ,I work on just Stihls but their all basic the same.Cory when they run out of gas they all are hard to start. I would hate to tell you to start changing parts as in fuel lines , but that sounds like the problem.

Yes , an old fuel line could be causing "VAPOR LOCK" but afew other things you need to check is 1 take the muffler off and see if the exhaust port is plugged or restricted at all. Also see what condition the piston and cylinder walls are in. 2 check the crankshaft seals, one behind the clutch/sprocket and one behind the flywheel. and 3 check to see if the cylinder gasket is leaking, and also the intake and insulator gasket behind the carburetor. mk.farnam@gateway.net

Cory, Everyone has given you good advice but forgot to tell you to replace the fuel filter in the tank. I would be doing that first then try the rest.
