dingaling bonnar bloke right press is best to fix but some people have no press. you don't have much to bend back.
block of wood and hammer fix it very easy, its only thin steel and take your time , if you bend to far tap back . I have fixed quite a few this way over the years that came through our shop. if you replace sprockets best to buy new chains as well or you flog out neu sprockets
when you make rail straight to stop it bend again if you can weld or can get some one to for you cut two strips metal or buy 25mmx5mm cut to rail length place strips od metal underneath rail inside lips . one strip metal on each inside lip and small stich welds along strips, no full weld ,small stiches let cool them do some more, keep heat down.
best fix like this solid brace will not bend again smile

Hi all
BB your offer to help with my rails is much appreciated and I am interested, will PM you
Got more done on the SB. Have set up an electrolysis bath and I am quite happy with the results. Have cleaned and primed the grass deflector and the plate off the handle. Have only applied an etch primer, my understanding is I still need to apply a surface primer as well before paint?

Have disassemble the Rear roller ready for cleaning

Reading other people's posts, to remove the cutter bearings without a bearing separator I need to cut them off with a grinder correct? Does this mean I will not be able ti fit new ones without a special tool?
[Linked Image]

Also the bearing on the PTO is hard to remove. This is the self aligning bearing correct? Doesn't it fall apart in your hand?
Bang on it a couple of times and the inner race moved but i don't want to damage it.

Hi dingaling,

Well that's one way to remove it if you don't have the correct tools, just be really careful so as not to damage the reel shaft as that's the critical area. There is probably another procedure you'll have to use when you refit the new bearings but I'll inform you of what that is later, especially on the driving side bearing which generally becomes lose over time and this situation must be remedied.

You can use top coat enamel straight over etch primer.

As far as the self aligning bearing is concerned, I'm not sure if yours actually is one as they are normally an open sided bearing and not fitted with neoprene seals. Check to see if you can oscillate the centre race. If not then you merely have a normal bearing and if that's the case you should change it for the correct type.

I'll look forward to your responses.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi,
It's been a while. Life got busy and the SB45 lost out, but I am now back into it.

First a big thank you to Bonnar Bloke for pressing my rail straight and the chat, you know your stuff.

I have painted the reel delicious red and had it sharpened with new bearings along with a new bed knife.

After tossing up between buying a compressor and gun etc, paying someone to spray it, or go the spray can route. I decided I couldn't justify paying for a compressor to paint the chassis. After reading some posts I decided to get a couple of cans of Galmet Jade Green. It is quite a bit lighter than the original colour as you can see compared to chain cover.

Don't know if it's too light for me or not but want to get it finished as spring is here and i want to mow with it.

Ordered some parts tonight end caps thrust bearing etc. Hoping to move quickly now

Hi dingaling,

I gather you found that Galmet Jade Green on our website ? if so it really isn't a good representation of the actual result you've got there is it. Honestly I'd like to remove that thread with that colour chip on it that is no where near what comes out the can. I feel that you're a tad disappointed and really wanted Alpine Green just like the inside of the chain case. The only way to get that is to get it colour matched which isn't cheap. We just don't have the correct formula as all that info was destroyed by Rover when they bought SB out.

I've spent many an hour trying to track down which paint company might have been SB's paint supplier as I'm still certain they would've bought local back in the 1960's ~ 70's and probably bought from Solver paints in Devon Park which wasn't far from the SB factory in Thebarton, but as they were bought out by Wattyl I feel that this corporate colour would've been deleted and never put onto their computerised database as it was no longer relevant as Rover wasn't a customer of theirs. Apple green isn't there either.

Cheers,
BB.

PS. I just love the reels in that colour after machining. Gotta Love it !

Hi all

Received parts on Friday but I think ODK sent me the wrong bearing for the drive shaft, the self aligning one. Just finished chatting with them and they said that is what rover sends them. Ordered "Engine Shaft Bearing Model 45" OEM A1122225 but got this on the right next to the clutch bearing
[Linked Image]

Have started putting her back together. going to stick with "Jade Green" but think i will keep the original colour inside the chain case for future reference [Linked Image]

Hi dingaling,

I think you'll have to go to CBC to get the correct unit as I wouldn't be using a standard firm tracking bearing myself. Maybe that's what Rover might have done due to cutting costs, but as the engine does move due to rail flex this is the reasoning behind the self aligning unit being used.

Cheers,
BB.

Now onto the engine. Planning on doing as little as possible as I am not overly confident pulling it apart. Just want to paint it.
