I have just fitted a brand new motor to this Stallion, motor runs well but it is very hard to get started without a whif of starter fluid on the air filter. Little spray and it will start first pull, but without it makes no attempt to start. Any thoughts?

These Chonda engines seem to be subject to most of the same common problems as the real thing, with the addition that the too-light-gauge metal used in the throttle/governor brackets and levers greatly increases problems in this area.

So, have you checked that the choke is closing properly? grin

Gadge

Seems to be closing Gadge, but I will have another look at it in the morning, Yes, the throttle assembly is complex and very flimsy, but if that is what I have to live with then that is the way it is

On the cheap talon models I found that the seal between air filter housing/Carby & engine was very important. They'd have a similar issue as you describe if the seals were shite, warpped plastic face, loose.
Maybe check it out..

Still the same, I guess starter fluid is the only way to go

What size is the motor Norm? I have a 6HP Chonda on a 3" pump that I use for irrigation and have had it in regular use for about 4 years now. In the early days it was hard to start and I couldn't see why but then I found the valve clearances were way off. Once I reset them to Honda spec it now starts first pull every single time. Could be worth checking.

Good call Trev, I hadn't thought of that. It is a 6hp and it starts fine with just a whif of starter fliud and runs very quietly

Dave I tried the full choke by adding a a piece of steel to the throttle to ensure the choke was fully closed but it made no difference so I removed it.
Gambler I don't know what the brand is , Rato or something I think, it isn't here at the moment. It is a 6hp and cost $160 and the shaft size is 1 inch. Stick with your Honda. There are some 196cc motors on ebay but you need to be careful, the shaft is shorter and they are only 22mm ones, easy to get caught out

I sold this mower probably 6/8 months ago, could even be longer, then he wanted me to fit a disc brake on it because he lives in the Dandenongs and it is hilly. Before I sold it to him I advised him it didn't have brakes and probably not a good idea for him. Anyway I ended up fitting a brake and I got a text message last night out of the blue,"ride on mower a gem can't beat disc brake hard to beat thanks all good thanks" I'm trying to work out if seeing it was a hot day yesterday and he had had a few beers, he got into a bad situation somewhere and the disc saved his bacon, bit strange but seems like he is happy with it laugh
