Hi there guys,

I need a bit of Yelp finding a coil for my 1968 14" Scott Bonnar. I have had it running for a couple of years. Now the coil is going any ideas where to get one cheap. My local mower shop have been great helping me restoring the motor but I can't afford the $85 for a brand new one at the moment

Thanks in advance

Joeyvek

Since this is posted under Briggs heading I assume you have a Briggs engine that may need a coil. Can you post the engine numbers? Being this old it either need converting to the Magnetron ignition coil or an ignitor installed as it may be just the point system dying and not the coil itself.

A lot of the older can be converted and you should get a use one from a donor engine but need those engine number to see what might fit your engine's setup.

An oldie actually a 1968 model. Any of following Megatron coils should for the conversion. PNs 398593/395489/793281/793281/591420 are used on 2hp to 4hp engines, such as 60000, 80000, 90100, Quattro, and Classic. You find one a donor engine quite easily.

I did the conversion on a 5HP B&S on a Gilson Rotary Hoe I got from the tip shop. I used a coil out of a 375 sprint off an old Rover mower. It was identical except for the mounting hole spacing. Luckily I have a mill in my workshop so a few minutes with a carbide burr to slot them a little and varoom, away it went.

Here is a list of the conversion coils.

There are three coils used on aluminum, single cylinder Briggs to convert from breaker point condenser to electronic as follows:

398593/395489/793281/793281/591420 are used on 2hp to 4hp engines, such as 60000, 80000, 90100, Quattro, and Classic

397358/697037/395490/395491 are used on 5hp engines such as 130000 series flat heads

398811/395492/398265 are used on 7hp to 16hp single cylinder engines, such as 170000, 190000, 280000, and 310000

Bit off topic but on my Greenfield B&S ride on I just used an early Holden coil and run it as coil/points ignition because I have a battery in it for the starter motor, and just because I could. Not suited to a push mower though, sorry to digress

Joey If your replacing with of Magnetrons (electronic triggered coil) then no you don't need to replace. All though it advisable to remove the points and plug the activator pin hole you don't even have to do that. You would need to cut wire points trigger wire and tape as it would ground out the Magnetron coil.

Now if you putting back a points coil then renewing or replacing the points and condenser is advisable.

Magnetrons are more reliable than the point system as there is no moving parts other than the flywheel. Only one slight draw back and that is it takes slightly more rpms at start up to get things going but the other benefits out weight this. This starting rpms difference is usually not even noticeable.
