So things have been getting progressively more and more serious with my back lawn, so much so that I have been on the lookout for an upgrade for my 20" SB45.

I was finding that the SB45 lacks fine adjustments of the front roller assembly, reel to bedknife clearance and rear roller to bedknife parallelism. It isn't the mowers fault, I was asking it to do a task that it was never really intended for. The limitations of the mower show up when you start mowing below 5mm, where the tolerances are very small.

So I found this and picked it up on the weekend. It has been sitting for a few years so I will give it a service and make sure it is all adjusted properly. I've got to say, the engineering on this is unbelievable.

Hello SimRice

Yes, the Model 45 is a Timex; the Greensmaster a Rolex.
These are beautifully precise machines, as you say.

The set adjusters adjust in .0007 inch increments!
I'm not sure whether you will need the handbrake or the lights.
I guess it came with transport wheels?

I have a question about the landroll clutch.
Because consistency of cut is important on greens, does the
clutch act as an on-off switch, or can it be 'slipped'
like the 45. I know it won't have the same 'feel' as a hair-trigger,
but does it have smooth engagement?

I would be also interested to know how easy it is to manually
backlap the reel?

In any case, congratulations. You finally have the very best
machine for the low cutting you prefer on your lawn.

All very Toro!

I had a play around with it last night Jack.

Since the frequency of clip is constant, you can't slip the clutch. You can vary the ground speed with the throttle. I am sure it will take some getting used to as the 45 is so easy to use and maneuver. I haven't taken it for a spin yet as I wanted to service the whole machine as it has been sitting for a number of years.

It came with the transport wheels, although I will remove the axles as I don't really need to transport it. As for the lights, the kids liked them!

As for the backlapping, you can just 'click' the bedknife adjusters to move the bed knife toward or away from the reel. As you mentioned each 'click' is 0.0007" of adjustment. There is a provision in the drive side of the reel for a standard 1/2" socket drive to slot into. You can buy an adapter for your drill, but I have just cut an old extension bar that I use to attach to the drill. Quite nifty really.

SimRice, I've done a little looking into the Greenmaster and it's a pretty high end machine. I know it's not the point of your thread but is there any chance you can post a picture of your lawn? It looks incredible in the background of the pictures you've posted.

I've just purchased my first SB 45 and am aiming to one day have lawn like yours (it's good to aim for the stars wink )

I have been working hard on the back lawn to transition it to super low cut. The mower with its current bedknife can cut down to 3.2mm which is where I have it set at present.

Sometimes there is not enough hours in the day. Cue the lights!

Hello SimRice

It is most unusual for us to have a residential user cutting their lawn so
low. It makes for some great reading - and it explores the potential of lawn
mowing on domestic blocks.

I really love that dusk shot with the lights ablaze.
But the kids are asking questions ... "Why is daddy mowing in the dark?"
And the gossiping neighbour, Mrs Mangle, is now on Facebook... mad

Thanks for giving us a new perspective.

Hi All,

If I may put my two cents in, I must admit I personally liked the lawn pre-cut, it was much greener and healthier looking. In many cases I don't like bowling greens as they are cut to a specification for a particular purpose and not to an appearance factor.

To each there own I guess, but as Jack mentioned I do love the photo with the lights on, it's as if there's a tournament to be played the very next morning, is there some illegal cash being made on a Crackerjack game here ??? LOL !!!

Cheers,
BB
