Hi all, I just got this mower given to me, it has a
Kirby Tecumseh 274
2 stroke engine made in Australia.
Model: KAV 74
Spec No: E6653
Serial No: 9323 7782

I am not sure if Yeoman is the brand name of the mower or not, I have never heard of it.

It has the "Trip Release" impulse starter and it appears to have a broken main spring.

I managed to get it started by using an old rope starter cord I had, and after a couple of pulls away it went, that was after I spent 1/2 hour trying to work out where the throttle was (lol) (see pic no:3).

Any one know if it is possible to get a replacement spring for it and/or know the part number???.

The other question I have is can anyone tell me what fuel mix these take, it says on the label mix 1/3 pint of 2 stroke oil per gallon of standard petrol.

I have no idea how to convert that to 25.1, 50.1 mixture ect, I also presume that being an old motor ethanol fuel is a no no.

Thanks in advance

If I understand the conversion of US oz to Imperial oz correctly your mix will be 25:1

US Pint = 16 oz
US Gallon = 128 oz

The basic formula would be to divide your pint oz by 3 and then your gallon oz by the previous result; unless you need to convert to liters which would involve a little more math.

Hello Buckets and AVB

I think this must be a bitsa.
It has an early Mayfair chassis, and was used extensively
as a 'store-brand' lawnmower, under various names.
The steel catcher dates it to the 1960s.

I do not recognise 'Yeoman' on any store brand mower.
The engine cannot be original.

Starter.
The springs are no longer available, but these starters regularly
come up on eBay. For information on repairing them, simply type
in 'trip release starter' in the search box.

Hope this helps.

Thanks AVB,

I will run the 25.1 and stay with that, unless someone comes up with a different formula.

many thanks

Hi CyberJack,

Thanks for the info, it must have been my lucky day I called into my local mower shop and after about 20min my man emerged with a second hand spring for $20.

I found your pdf with the diagrams and after much head scratching, I now have it back together again and it starts/runs quite well.

So again thanks to you and AVB.

Hello Buckets and AVB

Well, that's another happy ending.
These KAV engines were used extensively on Australian Lawnmowers
and built up a good reputation.

Cheers

Well, the exact mix ratio is 24:1, but 25:1 is close enough, for sure. 8 pints (1/3 pint) = 24. And yes, definitely avoid E10 fuel.

It's easy to get tangled up with Imperial/US unit conversions, but that's not necessary when working out the mix ratio.

Working out the direct volume conversions is another matter, as US [16 fl oz] and Imperial [20 fl oz] pints are different, and therefore so are the gallons. Even though there are eight pints in one gallon, in both systems.

I agree with CyberJack on its being a bitsa; that base looked very familiar, but the cast logo caused a bit of head-scratching. 'Yeoman' would be somebody's store brand, as he says. Victa made those for many chain stores, back then, and they would put on whatever name the store dreamed up.

You were in luck with the spring, for sure. Good outcome!

Cheers,
Gadge

Thanks Gadge clearing up the conversion for me. I was getting various amounts for the imperial gallon oz size. You know the all the old dis-information that is on the net so I error on the slightly lighter mix ratio.
