I am trying to replace the start cord and cannot get the cord to retract. I have tried to tension the spring but I cannot see any way doing this as it just unwinds.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Panda,

If you are winding the spring in the wrong direction it will unwind. cheers2

If you have the spring assembly at the bottom with the plastic part at the top should you be turning it clockwise or anticlockwise.

Panda,

In order to tension the starter spring you need to turn it clock wise. cheers2

Thanks for the clarification of which way to turn the spring.

My problem now is that the large clip on the black shaft is preventing the cord retracting as the legs of the clip get caught on either the case of the starter or the body of the mower.

I presume the metal bracket with two arms one of which has a slot in it has something to do with my problem. I cannot work out how this bracket should be reinstalled, as it fell out when I was uninstalling the starter.

Panda,

I have a picture below showing the starter and the friction spring goes into the groove. What you do is start to do up the center shaft and as you are doing it up you slide in the friction spring and locate it into the groove and finish doing it up. rolleyes

Thanks for the help, but I think I might have not stated my problem clearly.

My problem is in the pull start assembly. The problem involves the clip on the left which fits on the shaft below the black cog (part no ST12591 A). The bracket I am having trouble with is shown on the right.

Any ideas what I should be doing.

Regards
Panda

Still, having problems with refitting.

Could you please confirm order of assembly working with housing on bottom:

1. Anti bounce bracket with hook downwards on right hand side
2. Friction spring on top of anti bounce bracket
3. Then cog with sprocket, as it appears it needs to slide in and out as does the friction spring

Panda,

1. Assemble the sprocket into the housing (just put a bolt with nut loose to hold in position).

2. Tension up spring by turning the sprocket.

3. Put friction spring on and in position.

4. Put the two screws in housing and place the anti bounce bracket into position (the screws will hold it on).

5. Remove the bolt(used to hold in position) and put in screw for holding housing to engine.

6. Fit starter housing to motor.

7. Then pull rope and if the motor is ok it should start and rope will retract back into starter housing.

If this does not work then go to spare parts and manuals area and look for victa manuals Gear Starter for more directions. cheers2
