Thanks for the clarification of which way to turn the spring.
My problem now is that the large clip on the black shaft is preventing the cord retracting as the legs of the clip get caught on either the case of the starter or the body of the mower.
I presume the metal bracket with two arms one of which has a slot in it has something to do with my problem. I cannot work out how this bracket should be reinstalled, as it fell out when I was uninstalling the starter.
