hello everyone
ive just got a rover ranger 27 with a kirby motor model VK60B my problem is i disassembled the motor to check the ring gap and a general inspection of the motor but on removing the rings i failed to notice that the rings have a groove on the inside edge next to the piston and i'm not sure if the groove should be facing up or down so any help and advice on this would be much appreciated.
all the best mehead

Hello mehead and HT6,

A Ranger with a Kirby. That's an old beast.
This is from my Tecumseh manual and should assist here:-

Yep, just checked. Chamfer is uppermost, as per Jacks Diagram. Check ring gap does not exceed 0.020 or you will need to fit a new set. Also make sure your ring gaps are staggered and dont line up with each other when you put the piston in. Eg top ring at 12 o'clock, next ring at 4 oclock and the oil ring at 8. Plenty of oil between the rings also.

Good luck...
