wombatini I do very much agree with what blue has said about the filter and really shouldn't need an extra filter on it.There should be a filter on top of the fuel tap.
Like this filter on top of the brass fitting.

That really should be all that is needed,as anything else will restricted the flow.
The cover for the starter was only ever one size as the VC-160 Mark I was the only mower it was fitted to.I guess that's why they are becoming hard to find.
It will most likely be the dress cowl is sitting a little to high.As the starter as you know is bolted to the engine and perhaps the dress cowl is a little higher than it use to be.
Is the dress cowl plastic? I only ask as the originals were some kind of fiber glass, but not fiber glass (I'm not sure exactly what it is made of) and the later replacements were plastic as were the VC-160 Auto Drives, except the Mark I.If it has been replaced with a plastic one it may have warped as the plastic doesn't age well.
So have a look and try to see if you can fix it as you don't want to have to try and get another one as they are getting hard to find.

Here for a good time, not a long time.

G'day HT6 and all,
Been a while since my last post (minus the bugle Ha Ha !) In that time I have stripped the Victa 18 and overhauled the engine with new bearings and seals, rings etc. Would love to get it running but the ignition coil is buggered and I cannot seem to track down the old type with the flying primary leads. The universal coil will not fit. Any suggestions ? Also got an old, early / mid 60's Victa Cortina 2 machine the other day, complete bar catcher. Aside from the height adjuster being broken it is quite good cosmetically. I pulled the rear axle and height adjuster from a wreck and fitted it so now it works OK. Cleaned the carby & tank, fitted a new spark plug. Hey Presto, started first pull and ran very well. Yes I did say PULL. Some philistine has fitted a Zip Started to it instead of the impulse starter. Since I happen to have a spare impulse starter and drum I thought I'd fit it - OH YEAH !!! The 3 tangs on the flywheel had been filed off so that put paid to that idea. However, she dos run nicely so until something turns up to rob the correct parts from, she'll stay as it is for now. Since the lawn needed mowing anyway I used the old Cortina 2. Does any one know if I can still get the air filter for this mower ? It is the model that sits in a housing bolted to the front of the crankcase with a rubber tube going to the carby and the choke on the air filter housing. I'll post some pictures shortly.
Cheers,
Wobmatini.

Hi Blumbly, Yes I am starting to agree with you about my "extra" filtering. All my restores have the original tank filter but may be I'm being over protective. I have removed several of them due to fuel starvation issues. Live and learn ! All my VC160's have the fibreglass look-alike cowls and I think I've found the reason for the scraping - the starter mount bushes are the wrong side of the mounting lugs, raising the starter by about 1.5mm. This is how I found them but it was obviously wrong ! Will rectify shortly.

Cheers,
Wombatini.

Yes even that kind of difference with that starter will make the difference.I'm glad you found the problem.
