Hi I am new to the forum and I have just bought a Scott Bonnar Mower#00945 Model 450589 to do up. Thought you all might be interested, the Mower has been sitting in a garage for the last 25+ years and I am going to attempt to restore it. I am not that handy but I am going to give it a go. I am sure from what I have seen on the forum there is plenty of knowledge in here and people willing to help out with advice, I think I may need some along the way.

Hi again SB Obsession,

We would like to help you restore your Model 45, but to help us we will need larger pics of your machine, from different angles, including the cylinder reel and bedknife blade, and the inside of the chain case, ( which is on the right hand side, looking from the front) with pics of the sprockets where they are not covered by the chain.
Instructions for posting pics can be found HERE wink

This will let us access the condition of the sprockets and chains, and the overall condition of the machine. grin

Here is a pic showing good detail of the underside of a Model 45 (Series 1) mower chassis, to give you an idea of the size....
[Linked Image]

Could you also please post the complete string of numbers: (Model, Type and Code) that are stamped into the metal air cowling of the Briggs engine, from which we can get the date of its manufacture, and model information...this will also help us determine a rough idea of your machine age, as you cannot establish a Scotty's age by the model number or mower number. wink
cheers2

Hi SB Obsession, and thanks for posting the Model, Type and Code. Your Briggs engine was made on the 8th June 1976 and your machine most probably manufactured later that year. wink
Can you please post some more pics as requested. grin

Hi I have the mower completely pulled apart. I nearly have everything ready for sandblasting which I can get most of the small stuff blasted at work as they have a small sand blaster. The reel is in really good condition but I do need to replace the bottom blade. Once I start painting and putting back together I will upload some more photo's... If I can struggling to upload the above photo's but larger, I will work it out....

Also can someone assist me with getting the correct color for this model Scott Bonnar. I don't want to do it in Hammertone Jade Green would like to do it as close to the original as possible.

Hi Jaycee,

As you would have probably gathered by now, most of the early records of Scott Bonnar were disposed of years ago, and unfortunately the formula for the SB hammertone green was amongst those records. cry

However, I have a mate who works in the automotive paint field, that told me recently he could probably match the colour, starting with a hammertone deep tint base and gradually adding the tinters, to come up with the final colour, if they have something to match it to.

Underneath the chain-case cover, when properly cleaned of all the oil, grease and grime, would be a good place to start....if the finish is good, take the cover with you to an automotive paint shop, and get the guy to colour-match it for you. wink

BTW, the engine colour is heatproof engine paint you can get from Auto-One, Supercheap Auto etc. called 'International Orange' or Chevy Orange'. Both are pretty close to the original.
The stickers and decals are available on eBay for both engine and SB chassis and Catcher.

Please let us know how you get on,
cheers2

Hi Jaycee,
Nice work thus far mate, it will look like a bought one when finished. good1
When you take your reel and your soleplate complete with the bottom blade attached to the engineer ask him to supply a new bottom blade and fit it for you. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, you can crack the cast iron sole plate and they are $$$ to replace. wink

Cheers Deejay I will remember this for the next project as I have already removed the bottom blade. The soleplate looks all good and no cracks from what I can see.

Hi SB O,

Just out of interest are they two new catchers sitting there in one of those outdoor shots ? and also is the colour still the same as the shots of the unassembled components certainly look much different to the finished mower ?

Cheers,
BB

Hi Bonnar Bloke to answer your questions yes they are 2 brand new catchers 1 of them is a 14" and the other a 17". If your interested I can put you on to the guy that makes them. The colour is the same and I agree in the photo's it looks completely different. The colour I used is Septone hammertone green. Let me know if you would like more info on the catchers.

Hi SB O,

Yes I would definitely like to know more about the catchers and who makes them as I'm up for a few with me having about 6 machines not far away from restoring.

Cheers,
BB
