I just scored a SB 45 14" in fantastic condition Motor is a 61102 so has the vacu-jet which was better vac or pulsa? I payed 280 and has a been semi restored by an ex lawn mower tech The guy has given it a bit of a paint. Drum has been rebuilt. All original including great catcher. Basically a tidy up. Reel sharpen and oil change and I'll probably sell it. Runs like a dream. Details: Briggs 60102 0302 01 7007271 Mower 30230
That is a one-piece deck mower, which is automatically pretty good compared with a two-railer. It still has the captive cotter pin clutch, so be very sure it is tight and the pin hasn't started to pull through the clutch, though. If it has, the clutch half will have to be replaced pretty quickly before it vibrates and damages the deck at the engine mounts. (It would take a while to actually break a one-piece deck, but we've seen it done.) I'll leave the assessment comments to Deejay, I don't have his knowledge of the machines. He'll want to see pictures of the chains and sprockets, though.
The Pulsa-Jet was the "premium" carburetor and the Vacu-Jet was the cheaper carburetor. The main thing the Vacu-Jet couldn't do, was provide a consistent air fuel ratio as the fuel level changed in a deep fuel tank. You have a shallow tank so the Vacu-Jet is very satisfactory. Furthermore you have a metal body carburetor, not a Minion (plastic) one. Hence you have the simplest and most reliable carburetor available at the time. One negative though: you have no Choke-A-Matic, and that engine was (IMO) a real pain with the manual, non-coupled choke. If I cold-start them on full choke, they always rich load and stall before I can get to the pull-out bit and push it back in. Then I just push it in and it will start first pull, but having to start the engine twice bugs me.
Thanks grumpy Interesting on the carby. I'll be selling this one so not fussed. And mine has a plusa_jet The sprockets are in great Nic for a 70 machine. Nice and rounded teeth with plenty of meat It has been looked after which is nice. The chain cover has been bead blasted but needs painting. It has the horizontal covere screws
Hi Mike, what a nice tidy little machine. The machine would have been manufactured some time in mid to late 1970, as the date on your Briggs is the 27th July 1970.
Grumpy has covered all the bases, and as you say, a spin-grind for the reel and bed-knife, correctly adjusted with new reel bearings (if not already fitted) will be a very saleable machine!

So it's begun. I won't be stripping the mower fully as I decided the paint on the frame is in very good nik. I will be painting the motor. How good did the handles come up with a polish! That's original chrome!!! The guy before me painted the carb and fuel tank. I have stripped both back to bare metal. The carb will stay that way but how was the original fuel tank finished? Mike

Hi Ian, Your machine is a Series 2 (twin rail engine deck) 17" Model 45 which was first introduced as far as I know, in roughly 1974. It would have been fitted with an orange painted 3 HP Briggs and Stratton. The first black painted Briggs appeared on the Rover 45's after the Scott Bonnar was dropped from Rover-Scott Bonnar name long after the take-over.
So sorry Mike, for hijacking your thread!

Hi Mike, This is really coming along nicely, have you considered wire brushing the front roller? It would certainly improve its appearance. Congrats thus far, looking great!

Darryl, I thought the first black painted Briggs' were fitted to early 80's SB45's which still wore Scott Bonnar decals and were painted in a lime green colour? Before they went to the red Rover style.
Hi Rolla, Mate, you are quite correct...after your post, I did some research, and found that there was an original coloured Scotty 45 with a black painted Briggs....But, it wears the Rover-Scott Bonnar ID metal tag....So I feel partially correct, that no Model 45 manufactured solely by Scott Bonnar, had a black engine. Thanks for giving me the heads-up Rolla, and well done mate! Here's some pics:

Once again Mike, great work! You're really hooking into it. I quite like the colour you've chosen for the engine, it looks like a gunmetal grey on my screen? I'm enjoying looking through your pictures and watching your progress, many thanks for posting them
