Gday ODK people, I'm trying to get the blade boss off but with no success. The blade plate is off . Any special proceedure or trick would be much appreciated. It looks as though it might screw off but im not sure. So far I can't budge it. The boss itself has a hole in the side of it. Cheers.

Rest one side of the boss on a anvil (my anvil is a short length of railway iron, and clout the other side with a hammer, its a taper fit, hitting it like I said above generally gets it off easily. Take care not to smack the flywheel.

Thanks Joe , I'll try that tomorrow but first I'll take the motor off the base and that should make it easier to give it a good hit,looking forward to giving it a good wallop.

Worked just perfectly and the rest came apart just fine and undamaged, much appreciated Joe thanks again.

No worries, took me a while to find something solid enough to use as an anvil to get this done, Its quite easy to remove with the correct air tools too its just a matter of popping the squeeze the taper has on the boss.

I used a sledge hammer on the under side and a heavy hammer to hit it and easy like you said with one blow all done. Next time I'll try the air hammer and see. Wanted to hit it more though my fun ended too quickley. Take care.

This one took a few more hits because I was enjoying myself. Make sure you sit the block hammer on a very firm base and like Joe Carrol said be very carefull not to hit the flywheel. Cheers.

I'm a bit surprised that little claw hammer did the job, Rob. Looks like either 8 or 12 ounces. To me anything less than a 2 lb ball-peen is a "special light hammer", and anything below 1 lb is a "jeweller's hammer". The only reason I use a 3 lb for jobs like that is that I'm not really all that accurate with the cut-down one-handed sledge.

What I really need though, is a foot of railway line for an anvil. When I search ebay for "anvil" in Melbourne I find a bunch of jeweller's vices with little square flat bits on the tiny cast iron frame. How do you get bits of railway line, anyway?

A claw hammer is definately all thats needed, I used the back doorstep as a anvil until it cracked a while back, I find an air chisel with a modified tip is much better as I dont have to get any other stuff out, just plug it into the air hose and im done...

The air hammer is the go in my opinion because there's a lot less chance of damaging the Flywheel and it's very quick, but the way Joe suggested in the beginning got me out of a spot and is always a good backup.
Have a happy new year and I'm going to have a nice cold beer tonight and cheer it to all on outdoor king. Thankyou all very much ,oh and by the way I'm not doing anymore mowers till next year.

Yes, happy new year Rob, Joe, and everyone on Outdoorking.

I haven't tried an air hammer, I agree it is the most controlled way to do it that I can think of though. I'm guessing your method is to use it with an anvil and instead of a hammer, by striking across the boss. I have an idea someone on Outdoorking was recommending supporting right around the circumference of the boss, and striking axially on the end of the crankshaft. That should work marvellously except I'd expect to damage the crankshaft unless it came off pretty well instantaneously.
