I have an old victa 125 power unit reel mower and it doesn't have any spark .
I have spent a fair part of yesterday on it , and would like to no how hard is it to get at the magneto ?
Any thoughts please

It does depend of how old the engine is as to how hard. When you say magneto that refers to the flywheel. Now unless it has a crack or missing to many fins and not allowing enough air to be pushed around. Then I'd say its very unlikely that that is stopping the engine from sparking. If (where the magnets are) it is rusty then just clean up with some light grade sand paper or emory paper. I would say that something else could be wrong with it.

A 125 power unit is a bright orange series 70, to get into the points and magneto area, you need to remove the bright orange cowling and starter, then the big nut on the flywheel, and use an appropriate tool to remove it.

Generally the points are just dirty causing it to stop sparking which can be cleaned up very quickly without doing any more than just taking the flywheel off.

Ok thanks heaps guys that is part of what I had done yesterday , to undo the nut what is the best way to back up the flywheel? Is the nut right hand thread ?

Yes it is a right hand thread. Once you have the nut off see if you can wobble the flywheel pulling upwards as you wobble,just with your fingers. If not you can (being very carefully) use screwdriver to assist,but don't (and I mean don't) use a lot of force with screwdriver as flywheels can and do sometimes break in middle. So with the screwdriver your only seeing if it will come off easily. So please I can't stress enough very little force with screwdrivers. If it is going to be hard to get off you will need some kind of puller. I use a harmonic balance puller,seems to work very well.

I tend to use two (or even three) large (1ft or more tip to handle end) flat head screw drivers.

Place one on either side, have someone apply even, but not excessive force down on them, say, the same force needed to push down on an old red bike pump hooked to a near inflated bike tire.

Now, making sure to first put the centre bold back on the crank shaft thread, so that the top of the shaft, and the top of the bolt are level (to protect the crank shaft & thread) hit the centre repeatedly with a hammer.

Wow I certainly wouldn't recommend doing what Ty has suggested not on a model 1 or model 2 Rotomo. Doing that can so easily break the ignition plate and flywheel.Unless the flywheel has moved you won't be able to get screw driver between the flywheel and the ignition plate as their is a lip to stop that.Best to go to bunnings and get a harmonic balancer kit (or some other puller set-up),I think their under $20 now.For if you break the ignition plate or flywheel good luck on finding any thing good.In fact good luck on finding any,any that you don't have to buy a complete mower just to wreck.

Thanks again guys will have a crack at this tomorrow ,will try to post photo of the mower . It is a roller mower not a rotary , the plug lead runs into the body of it to the crankshaft where the magnets etc are I guess . I need to make sure that they aren't covered in rust or corroded so the thing works ?does that sound right ?

Whoopps sorry I got my topics messed up I've put the wrong pictures up. Pulling the flywheel off however is the same way. Guess that's happens when your too tiered and should be in bed sleeping. If you still need to see some pictures of the ignition have a look in my VC-125 & VC-160 restore topics their are pictures in those to to show what they look like.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your help , just had flywheel off , cleaned points, put it all back together , first pull the mighty victa roared into life . Too hot in perth for mowing lawns now so I'm off for a spot of fishing a very happy man .
