You didn't mention that it is a Kirby engine, roebuck, which was making it unnecessarily hard for us. The names of quite a few of the Kirby-Lauson engines had a simple code. H meant horizontal crankshaft and V meant vertical crankshaft, K meant built, assembled or sold by Kirby in Australia, and the number at the end was the alleged gross horsepower in tenths of a horsepower. The HHK range included, at a minimum, the HHK40, HHK60, HHK80, HHK100, and HHK120. Hence the HHK100 seems to have been alleged to have 10 hp gross output.

Hi Grumpy , it does have kirby/tecumseh written on it . So it's a 10 hp, I guessed that but I wasn't sure . I love looking at these older machines and when I get a few other projects out the way I will have a go at fixing this one. My mate would like to put a new motor on it or a a good second hand one on his slasher so now he can look for around the ten hp .
I tried to edit the post but I was to late to do so , sorry for that. Thankyou

No problems roebuck, having the edit period time out is a major frustration when it happens.

There should be a reasonable range of alternative engines your friend can consider as a replacement. Usually the best prices are found on second-hand side-valve Briggs engines. The Honda G400 is a competing side-valve 10 hp engine of the same generation that seems quite well designed.
