Got this given to me and the bloke said it had something wrong with the starter motor that had been taken off but still there, I gave it a zap on a battery and seened to kick out alright and spin up, but the solinoid was broken so I thought I might be on a winner here and went and got a new one and out it back together but when I started turning it over the starter was a bit slow and smoke started comming out of it so ordered a new starter motor and thats when I realised all was not good with the moter as it was chuffing back through the carby, so I ripped that off and checked the tappet clearances which still had claerance anyway, I cleaned the carby while I had it off anyway, so I pulled the head to check the valve seats and Bugger the bore is stuffed, so back to square 1, I am looking for a replacement engine for it, I got a probably 4hp on a mower I got from the tip but dont know if it would be big enough to drive the Beer Gofer I am going to turn this into, have started pulling the mower gear off it but have found that if I use the engine from the greenkeeper I will need to get a pully with a smaller ID for the shaft, what do you guys think about the little engine on this thing would it do for a Gofer with a flat tray for the esky?? , here it is in all its glory. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11420-l_side_catcher.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11421-back_catcher.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11422-front_sticker.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11423-engine_top.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11424-back_corner.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11425-head_off.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11426-bore.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2013/07/full-6801-11427-top.jpg)

The chonda on that Greenkeeper is probably a copy of the GXV160, which was advertised as 5.5 hp. There have been small ride-ons with less power than that, so it should be able to run that machine around with no load and the deck removed. It will still have the original gearing though, so you may be limited to the lowest couple of gears, and I doubt you'd be able to tow anything much.

The output shaft size and bolt mounting pattern will be the biggest decider, the ride on will either have a 1" shaft or a stepped shaft.
If your not planning on using the deck on it for cutting grass it will have plenty of go for just driving around, I pulled several heavyish items with a rover colt 5, which had an old school 5hp briggs on it.

yeah you are right Joe the B&S 11hp has the 1" output shaft and the greenkeeper has a 7/8" shaft, but I have ordered a 2 1/2" OD by 7/8" ID V pully in a "B" size so that should be OK, it is a bit smaller than the original on the OD but with less HP should help, might just need to adjust the idler pully a bit for belt tension, dont know if I will have to worry about it too much anyway as a bloke I work with just dropped in for a beer and said he had a 8 1/2 hp briggs off a ride on he said I could have so I would recon the shafts would probably be the same size? he said the only problem with it is it starts to miss and fart after it has been running for an hour or so, so from that I recon the valve stem just wants a bit taken off it, or maybee a coil but normally a coil will show problems breaking down before an hour, but either way I have a few options now. And can change the transaxel pully to adjust the gearing if need be but for what it will be used for it probably wont worry me too much.

Well stripped down the 8.5hp Briggs and give the flywheel and coil a clean up on the wire wheel and cleaned up the pull starter set up that holds the flywheel on and that works now, cleaned the carby and fitted the new starter motor to it but when I went to give it a run it is blowing back through the carby, it fired and run for a very short time and I have not been able to get it to run since, it seems to be locking up like it is trying to turn the opisite direction or at least thats what it sounds like, making a clunking noise, when I get some more time I think it is time to drop the head off and check to see if the valves are seating, I will check for valve clearance first but still looks like the head is comming off. Is there something with the govenor that can affect the timing?

It sounds a lot like a sheared, incorrectly installed, or missing flywheel key, resulting in grossly incorrect ignition timing. If you put the flywheel on with its keyway misaligned with the key in the crankshaft keyway, the flywheel would slip around relative to the key as soon as it ran.

Thread can be closed as this project has been put on hold as I have been given a better ride on for my beer wagon.
