I have managed to free the piston by using petrol to flush out the metal particles, but the cyclinder is scratched. how much damage can be done before I have to rebore it. Most of the scratches don't actually look to bad. I really don't want to put the money into reboring.

I Cannot really suggest much because I cannot see the amount of damage done. However if the scratching is only minor You could avoid re - boring, By Trying to Re - Hone the cylinder with a cylinder Hone and fitting new piston rings. Check the piston to see if its scratched.

Macca, If scratching is minor, the piston may still work fine, you must be sure to remove all metal shavings from the chamber, try using a magnet.

Wash the whole engine block in Clean Kerosene and thoroughly dry with a dustless rag. Or if you have an air compressor blow it out until dry with compressed air. This should remove all traces of metal shavings or grindings.

Macca, using an air commpressor is the best way to get the metal shavings out, if you do not have one you should definitely buy one, all mower mechanics need one.

Macca, the scratches will fill up with carbon over time anyway so minor scratches should not worry you. It will get better with time.
