I've got a Victa 160 (with the old crank and go starter) powered by a Series 70 2 Stroke with metal carby and a Victa Contractor (red in colour, with a 'zip starter', Series 80 engine with black plactic carby. I bought the two secondhand hoping to marry the two up but I'm frustrated that here in Wagga the mower businesses are anything but helpful and would like to get some help rebuilding the head (piston/rings) of both mowers.

They both work though the 160 is on the rough side - the Contractor is in excellent condition except the piston/ring have gone - starts easy and idles at low revs but as soon as you turn the throttle up it dies. Workshop wanted to charge me $320 for a rebuild of the head! They said the spark was low and the rings were worn.

I opened both and had a look - rings are worn on the Contractor and scoring to piston but the 160 looks fine and has good compression though it is a little smokey. Any help would be much appreciated.

Mike,
The power Torque (Contractor) sounds like you will have to rebore the cylinder & replace the piston, rings, bearings and gaskets. That is a major overhaul.

The 160 sounds like just a piston ring replacement which is not that hard to do. You can purchase workshop manuals on ebay for about $15-00 which would help you a lot.

The quoted price from the mower shop sounds correct as the rebuild takes a lot to do and usuall takes up to a day to do and as you know wages are not cheap these day.
