Hi tubby, and welcome to Outdoorking. If it is the owner manual you want, this seems to be it:

Thanks grumpy, but still need a bit of help with the brake setup.
The foot brake doesn't work at all [when pushing the foot brake it just goes flat to the floor with no braking at all, i had a look at the back of the left hand side of the wheel and there is some cloth like material hanging out the braking part, i would like to fix it if possible but need more detail of the actual setup, also can't see any hand brake assembly either, i am very new to ride on mowers, probably need a workshop manual but strapped for cash on a pension.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

We'll need some photographs tubby, so we can work through this with you. Please post both a general picture of the mower, and some pics of the brake linkage and the brake itself.

Usually either we find a manual or another member has a similar machine and can help us, but if necessary we can probably work it out from first principles. It may take a while if we have to do that, though.

Did you read the owner manual? It includes a full illustrated parts list, and some warnings about what might happen if you mis-use the brake pedal.

Yes, i did read the instructions not to use the foot brake when engine is not going.
thanks mate

BUGGER, BUGGER, BUGGER, can't get a hold of a camera off anyone yet, best i can do is refer to the exact same model in this link
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Cox-Orion-XL...pt=AU_Lawnmowers&hash=item27b9babe6f

I can't see a hand brake lever on that one either, the foot brake in the picture looks to be ready for use but on mine it just sits flat on the metal facing foward direction.

Looking from the back of my machine, the cloth like material hanging out is on the left hand side, right next to the gearing that the chain sits on, it is covered by a round metalplate.

If anyone can help, it would be appreciated.

tubby, I think we need two more photos. First, you've told us the handbrake mechanism has been removed from under the mudguard. Can we see a picture of where it used to go, please? Second, your picture of the footbrake is too far out of focus for us to see what has happened - it could be a clump of grass, as far as I can tell from the picture.

If the handbrake is mostly missing, you will need to find either a wrecked mower the same as yours, or the missing parts at a Cox dealer. If it is just one or two simple parts missing, we need to see where they should be and what they connected to.

So far as the footbrake is concerned, it may have self-destructed, or there may just be a pin or link disconnected. We need pictures of good enough quality to show us what has happened.

Thanks grumpy, the only reason i know the hand brake was in the back left inner guard is that the owner of the one on ebay for sale advised me of this, his was also already removed by previuos owner before purchase, so if i can come across one shouldn't be to hard to assemble.

The foot brake on mine doesn't work at all, it just sits flat in a forward position, i lifted it up in the picture posted.

It is very hard to get a clear picture but i have done my best in the following pics.

The second picture shows just above the cloth hanging out, it looks like an adjustement nut as it adapts onto the rod the goes right down to the brake pedal itself.
There is nothing else in there but that cloth material, i would think that some type of brake pad should be in there but there is nothing but that cloth, maybe the previous owner has stuck that crap in there but it has fell out, looks like shreaded carpet.

appreciate anyones help
thanks

Those pictures aren't worth the entire thousand words tubby, but even so it looks to me as if that is an external contracting band brake. It probably has an adjusting screw at one end of the band (which will be a single full circle, with an anchor on one end and a link to the brake pedal on the other). Find the end that is the brake pedal link, and verify that it moves in the tightening direction when the pedal is pushed down. Most likely the pedal adjustment screw will be on the anchor end, but it might be on the link end.

It looks as if the friction material was not properly attached to the inside of the band, and it has come off. That is the woven material hanging out all around - it used to be brake lining.

You could remove the band and take it to a brake reliner for repair.

Thanks grumpy for that explanation, not as difficult as i first thought, just one more question, are there specialized brake reliner places that do brakes for ride ons, or can any place like brake plus for cars can do this type of job ?

You need a car brake reliner, tubby. Most of them send the jobs to a city or regional specialist these days, but some still do it themselves - I don't think it matters very much whether it is done locally or not. To get the job done right the first time, you should figure out how thick the lining material should be. That means adjusting the band adjuster in the loosening direction, springing the band to make its diameter as big as the linkage will allow, and measuring the internal diameter of the band. Then measure the outside diameter of the brake drum inside the band. Give both dimensions to the reliner, and he/she can figure out how thick the lining can be.

One thing you might try, is talking to Cox or a local rideon dealer, and see if there is somewhere they usually send these jobs. It might save you the hassle of accidentally choosing an incompetent supplier. That mess you currently have, is the result of someone either trying to do it himself, or choosing a really awful relining shop. The lining material needs to be solid material, bonded to the band, and I think that was woven material, probably glued (badly) to the band. As you said, it might even have been a piece of woolen carpet.
