OK so I am a bit of dill. I ran out of 2-stroke oil so I just ran it on petrol - was in a hurry to get the lawn mowed.

Well towards the end of the mow it started clanketing clank noises - and gave up in a puff of smoke.

Oh dear - I've been foolish.

So I pull the thing to bits - piston doesn't look too scored from what I can tell.

I put a new head gasket on - reassemble, new spark plug, new air filter, new OIL in the fuel.

No go.

Strip down the engine to bits, wash every bit, curse, mutter, pray, sob..

Re-assemble -
No go.

In the process of all this managed to break off the copper 'kill switch'. Bypass that and keep going.

Damnit!! I read and read this forum seeking answers!! Turns out I had the carburettor springs around the wrong way - so that's why it wouldn't start.

THanks Bruce for posting this: G4 Carburettor Diagram https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=15455#Post15455

So it runs now but guess what!

Clankety Clank still. Backfires and chokes in long grass.

Any hints? My next thought is I've blown piston rings or something similar?

Comments welcome, no need for abuse, I've already kicked my own bum for being foolish!!

<Sheepish grin>

more than likely the conrod bearings have suffered some severe wear, you can probably get a good second hand one cheaply.

If you go to the local scrap metal yard they might sell you a whole mower you could take the motor off for not much more than the scrap steel price!

Cheers Joe.

OK. what's my next steps to check this? I could either:

Buy a second hand mower $250 from the mower shop (Rover, 4 stroke B&S engine) or spend time on this.

Budget says do this. frown

So what's the next steps to check for wear?

It's running: It starts, and it runs.

* It stalls when it's on IDLE
* It chokes & backfires when going through moderate grass (it is winter, so it probably won't survive the summer)
* it sounds clankety - not sure if that's the sharpened but still easily swivelled blades. I suspect something more..

Should I
a) pull muffler off and look for scoring on the side of the bore?
b) check for wobble in the base plate ( How exactly?)
c) replace / repair the decompression plug?

Not sure what to do next..
Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Jon

Well-well-well,i would strip it down totally and do a full re-build,then it would be good for another 20 years or so.because the internal steel got very hot due to friction,i would not be suprised if the upper/lower seals got cooked and broken rings.i feel sorry for you but it will be good experience and you will be proud of your re-build...ken rockon

Hi alwayscurious, this is the course of action I would suggest also, plus the fact you may be lucky enough to get a motor in reasonable condition, that you could tinker with and get running sweetly, at a lot less than $250.00 wink

Righto chaps, after checking around - Here's the course of action I have taken

1) put down a $50 deposit on a 4 stroke Rover with Briggs&Stratton motor -reconditioned from mower shop

2) decided to pull down the engine to bare parts again - rings, and new seals (top & bottom).

Should be an interesting journey.

Also - it's recycling "junk" week on our suburb at the moment! Yay.

Picked up a non-working Ryobi Whippersnipper (fuel lines perished & starter clutch a bit hammered)

Also a briggs & stratton 4 stroke Rover mower (not working - no spark).

So it should give me PLENTY of small machines to practice on wink
