I doubt it will be easy to get your hands on a new piston for an old Pope 2 stroke and probably cost a lot more than a good second hand engine.
I've bought a few old Pope 2 stroke mowers and the sellers are lucky to get $30. for a complete mower as there is very little interest in these old mowers.
People can advertise them as much as they like but unless they are like new ,these mowers don't sell for much.
If you look on eBay or start ringing every mower shop you can find, then you may get lucky and find one but sometimes you just have to get one made from a piston manufacturer like JP Pistons if you don't care about the cost.
ha ha ha.. Yeah, one of them would be nice. It takes a coupla days to get over the aches & pains of pushing the old Pope round the yard for half an hour, but I'd hafta get my grandson to programme it - or do the mowing for me, but he can't stop long enuff from doing that gaming thing they all seem so addicted to these days.
Hi Freddy, what motor are you talking about, that round muffler is for a Briggs, the thread on that muffler is 3/4 BSP Should be able to find an old Briggs motor on the side of the road somewhere. I have plenty here but the postage is just stupid money
The 4 stroke muffler will be no good, the original 2 stroke muffler has a large expansion chamber compared with that Briggs 4 stroke exhaust.
Adapting the Briggs & Stratton muffler to your 2-stroke Pope mower will not work effectively and will likely cause a significant loss of power. The design of a 4-stroke muffler is fundamentally different from that of a 2-stroke muffler, especially one with an expansion chamber.
Why It Won't Work
The main reason for the incompatibility is the expansion chamber, which is a crucial component of a 2-stroke engine's exhaust system. Unlike a 4-stroke engine, which uses valves to control the flow of exhaust and intake gases, a 2-stroke engine relies on a carefully tuned exhaust system to create a pressure wave. This wave travels back up the pipe and helps "push" unburnt fuel mixture back into the cylinder before the exhaust port closes. The expansion chamber is specifically designed to generate this pressure wave.
A Briggs & Stratton 4-stroke muffler is a simple baffle muffler that's designed to reduce noise by slowing down and cooling exhaust gases. It does not generate the necessary pressure waves for a 2-stroke engine to operate correctly.
If you were to install the 4-stroke muffler on your 2-stroke Pope mower, you would likely experience:
Significant Power Loss: The engine will not be able to generate the correct pressure waves, leading to a loss of the scavenging effect and a poor combustion cycle.
Poor Engine Performance: The engine may run poorly, stall, or be difficult to start.
Increased Risk of Damage: The engine may run too hot, which can lead to premature wear or even catastrophic failure.
You may be able to adapt another 2 stroke muffler to fit even a Victa 2 stroke muffler would be better.I'd say the victa cylinder outlet will be smaller that the Pope but you may be able to open the fitting on the muffler a little to fit the Pope.
