Hi All, Well I made the mistake of assuming that an older gent selling me a B&S/Davey fire pump was trustworthy (a.k.a 'Yes, it runs fine - I just don't have any petrol here to show you.") - thats my mistake entirely. Anyway the engine is a B&S Industrial Plus 5hp 133432 Type: 0035 03 The issue I have found with it is that he's put it away for several years with a carb full of fuel and it's gummed to heck. I've removed the carb, have managed to open it, have been spraying it for several days with SCA Carb & Throttle cleaner. It's making slow progress. The carb even if I manage to clean it fully, is going to need all the seals replaced - AT THE MINIMUM - so I wonder if buying a new carb is the smarter route? From using the B& S parts list I can find that the entire carb assembly is part #495652 https://www.briggsandstratton.com/a...admanual.133432003502_IPLURL_LO.pdf.htmlI've had a quick look and can't locate this part anywhere - so unsure if I should just plow ahead with cleaning it and get a seal kit or can locate a suitable replacement carb.......so your sagely expert advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance, Nick

That particular carburetor is no longer available thru Briggs. The repair kit is and it is PN 498260.
Just spraying the carburetor is not going to clean it. Here I use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean these with soap and water.

Speedy, wow what are the chances of that! Haha I normally would search to see if anyone else had one but figured it was buckley's - very impressive and yes I certainly hope that it won't require that level of work. The only thing I've also found with this one is it had a crapload of limescale deposits inside the pump itself - probably won't make much difference in rreal terms but I tried to remove as much as I could by soaking in a descale solution overnight and hosing out. Got rid of a bit but still plenty left. My experience with this pump has been eerily similar to yours......as soon as I got it home and went out to test I found the petrol gushing out as fast as I poured it in , which like you I figure was the carb rings. I used SCA starter as well and did get it to run for a very, very short period. Seeing as I hope to never use it at all (I'm actually a member of our local RFS and our property is pretty safe but this was a 'just in case' buy) I don't think I'll go to quite the trouble of cleaning the sump, cylinder head etc - but just having it run would be nice. Terrific thread and thank you for sharing. That particular carburetor is no longer available thru Briggs. The repair kit is and it is PN 498260.

Ah much thanks AVB, I'll cease looking for the carb then - but I will try and find the repair kit. Much thanks for this. Alas I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner but will try and make do. Nath, wow nice to see Yamaha are still making VERY healthy profit margins! Appreciate the suggestion but I'll have to use something else but good to know for future reference.

Ok - ordered that B&S rebuild kit - went with the slow boat from China one as am in no huge rush to get this done: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001240553571.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.7fa74c4dGOl2kHNot sure where most of those lil bits go - as from what I've pulled apart so far there's no that many pieces so perhaps there's some extra ones in there for other models. We will see. Have the old carb soaking in a hot solution of citric and oxalic acid - the latter is used to clean up stainless steel so figured it wouldn't do much harm. Will see how its going after a few hrs and rinse off.

Just let me take it apart and see what I'm doing with it.. cheers speedy Speedy, thats a very kind offer but I'm sure I'll be able to get this one going with a lil more elbow grease. After looking at some photos of others carbs it's not as bad as it could have been, just the worst I've ever dealt with - but then again I'm very pedantic about draining the carb bowl before putting into storage and running the motor after the fuel tap is turned off etc. Much thanks for your very kind offer. :-) PS. FWIW probably don't use oxalic acid to soak carbs in.....silly of me, its fine for stainless steel but I assume the carbs are made from pot metal or similar. Luckily I checked early and though it removed all the varnish it did pit the carb up a little and strip the brass coating from the steel valves. I don't think it was badly damaged but not something I'd use again.
