Hi all just curious if anyone has had to replace a governor arm on a Briggs and Stratton engine. I finally got my greenfield tractor 11 running and went to adjust the revs when I found out it is broken off. Does anyone know whether it’s replaceable and whether they have one. Also looking for an exhaust for it if anyone want to sell this as well. Thanks for the help in advance. If the governor isn’t easily replaced is there also another way of controlling the revs?
Hi Jared, I did it on a KingKat with a Briggs on once and once on a Greenfield with a Honda on it. Not easy and requires a bit of effort and making bits up. Because the travel on the throttle body shaft from full closed to full open you have to get the cable travel to be slowed down otherwise it becomes too sensitive. You have to slow it down with a couple of levers, might get away with one lever You need to mount a lever up on the pull start cover/ side of the motor and make up a rod to go from the carby to the new lever up close to the fulcrum point of the new lever. The longer you can make this lever the better as it gives you better control of the butterfly.. Then from the bottom of the lever you can connect a push/pull choke sort of cable to it. Ain't easy but it can be done.
Are you referring to the governor bell crank (cross) shaft? The one in images 2 and 3. If so you already got it out and put it back is the reverse. The only fun part is replace the bushing if need as it got to be pressed back in and use appropriate reamer. The last bushing I did on a governor the reamer was smaller than what the service manual said to use.
I don't see very many broken governor shafts though I have seen a couple that have peen on paddle to be loose.
Yes AVB the arm has come out but the other end has broken off inside the housing of the sump on the motor. Because of this when I try to adjust it for the revs of the motor nothing happens. That part of the rod just fell out but the other half is still inside the housing. Is it pressfit or screw to get the other half out of the sump?
You are going to need to remove the sump to get the broken parts out. And the new cross shaft is installed from the inside and retained by clip on the outside. With it broken you should also check for other damage especially the governor assy.
Hi all thanks for everyone’s help. I managed to remove the governor arm and repaired it. Luckily there was no other damage. The governor arm still doesn’t do anything though I can’t work out why. Is there another way of controlling the idle speed through the carby? Also The next issue I’m having is that the rev control arm (don’t know what else to call it sorry) doesn’t seem to be changing the revs of the engine. It seems to be running at the same all the way whether it you move the lever to the fast or slow position. Could there be a problem with the carby linkage or something? Also the engine is surging quite rapidly when running? Sorry bout the multitude of questions and thanks for any help in advance
Sorry if I am stating the obvious, but have you 'preloaded' (for want of a better term) the gov mechanism.
I can't remember which way from memory, but (with engine off) you move the governor arm so you get full throttle on the carby, undo the gov arm clamp, then gently turn the gov shaft one way with a flatblade screwdriver, then retighten clamp
You rotate throttle vane to to full throttle position while the governor arm movement. Then you rotate the cross shaft in the same direction until it stops then you tighten the clamp screw. This takes the play out the governor setup.
Note some cross use flat blade screwdriver and others a very small hex socket.
Thanks AVB - I never remember the name for some reason. Good to hear you are alright by the way
Have never seen a hex head on them - I suppose thats mainly on the larger or newer engines. I am more accustomed to air vane governors and L heads haha
Looks like Jared has a flat blade screwdriver slot on the shaft anyway
