Hi guys,

My Name is Paul and I have a little bit of a problem with my model 40 Scott Bonnar mower.

The motor is fitted with a villiers 2105 engine the engine is clagged out and I am unable to get parts. The recoil starter is missing and there is a bad oil leak coming from the flywheel now, and it is leaking onto the magneto coil (which are as rare as hens teeth) and tonight I burnt out the rubber wheel that is used as a clutch. I am thining of replacing the motor with a honda 5.5hp job which I can pick up cheap enough.

My problem is where can I get a cetrifugal clutch to suit so that I can do away with the rubber tyre clutch? Or better still can any one tell me where I can buy parts to rebuild the motor and the clutch tyre.

I realy want to rebuild this mower to it's former glory as it is a classic item.

Can you post a picture of the mower as I don't recall a model 40. We have most parts list (Models 30 to 45)in the parts list and manuals area of the forum but not for that model.

As to the clutch you should be able to use a later model one like the model 45 clutch which is still available.

The mover is a 14 inch cut. The serial number starts with 40 so I may have been led up the garden path on that one.

Bruce, This is the same type of machine that I had originally and was looking for a catcher.....impossible to find...I eventually gave the machine away.
BTW, It would be a mammoth task to retro-fit a Model 45 clutch, as the shaft is different diameter and not much room.

Yep that is the mower,

And yep bruce that is the post I am referring to.

I don't mind how big a task it is to mount a new motor and clutch on the mower but I think the clutch off the 45 would give me a 1 to 1 ratio where the model 40 is about 2.5 to 1.

I am going to do a bit more research into this and see what i can come up with any help in this is appreciated.

Any way here are some photo's of the offending girl.

I realy do love it and I want to restore it as I think it is a great project. My wife hates it so it must be good

Hey Bonnar Nightmare, and a big warm welcome to the forum.
I had one of these machines and may I say they are very hard to get parts for.They were known at the time as a "Terrace Mower"
Turf Machinery Services may be able to help you out with the clutch parts you need to restore the old girl, as you pointed out, the gearing is critical as it governs the walking pace of the machine whilst cutting.

I have a Honda powered Scotty Model 45, and you can see the pics in the "Old Mower Pictures","Restored Model 45" thread on this forum if you are interested. I have used a 2.5hp Honda 4 stroke as it was the easiest to mount without having to reshape and modify the lower handle assembly.

A 5 hp Honda on a Model 40 would be a tight fit; considering the height of the horizontal engine shaft I doubt if it would line up and most probably be to high to suit.
Perhaps another option maybe to purchase the one from Turf Machinery Services ($220.00) which is all complete and running and then restore one to mint condition, using one for parts.

Bit of an update on this. I took the head off the villiers this afternoon and I have found the bore to be in great nick the valves are unburnt and the valve seats look brilliant. The piston is picking up a bit of oil on the return stroke but I think it will just be a case of a re-ring. I will just need to source some crankshaft seals and rings. But all this will depend on if I can locate the rubber tyre for the clutch or get mine rebuilt. I have been in touch with a mate of mine who does polyurenthane casting and has said it can be done from polly but rubber will be better as it can withstand more heat. I will just have to make a steel mold instead of a timber one. I was happy to get the mower running but now I want to restore it. If I have to get the wheel re-cast it will give me enough time over christmas break to sandblast and paint the mower body, and repair the catcher.

Thanks Darryl for your help. I just wish that the mower you had advertised was a little closer than the state of mexicana the freight is the only thing stopping me, especially this close to Chistmas. The wife would definately be saying "you and that bloody lawn mower!" So I won't push that button just yet.

I wish I had the rebuild in hand, at the moment I am still trying to find rings and seals. I also want to try to get the rubber tyre I was referring to.

I made a template of the catcher side today and my guys will be cutting them on the profile tomorrow ready for seam rolling.

You should be able to get the seal from CBC bearing company just give them the measurements.

I should be able to get the seals made to suit.


The new sides for the catcher came up a treat the guys cut them from Galvinised sheet. I will post up some pic's when I get the time.

ive jut bought that same mower
mines all complete i got it from an old man who had it sitting in a shed for around or over ten years ill see if i can get a pic of it
see if you can start it mine just needed fuel and a rope to start it it blows a lot of smoke and leaks some oil around the shaft the wheel connecting do the drive but its all complete
