While on the hunt for a 19" deck for the Tornado, I was speaking to a guy in Richmond and he told me that there were 18" mulching discs for the Victas as well. This got me thinking of whether anyone had retrofitted a Victa 18" mulching disc to an old Victa mower, and whether it was a possibility, especially when thinking about the dearth of thumblatch catchers.
So, have any of you guys come across these Victa 18" mulching discs? If so, would you know whether they can be fitted to the old 18" Victa decks? Might be a good way to get a cheap mulch and catch mower with my old horse here.
G'day Sapper and Tyler, you most certainly can get an 18"mulching disc. I have two 18" thumb latch powertorque mowers with them, one of which I posted a pic of - my red one. No mods needed. I've sold two 18" steel deck mulch and catch 2 stroke mowers. For it to work properly, need the mulch plug on the rear to form a vortex to chop up the clippings and force them down into the ground. That's the problem, they weren't made during that era. If you're good with metal, you could perhaps fashion something that blocks the exit of the clippings and forms a circular chamber under the mower, which the mulch plug does, but such a modification would probably have to be permanently held on with rivets or screws. Not worth it IMO. Who knows though, maybe it'd work brilliantly with a thumb latch alloy base.
Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!
Hi Tyler, The blade carriers with the ears in them are exactly the same as the normal blade and will fit straight on the PT motor. The ear type blade carrier was fitted to any of the 4 strokes Victa used. I have modified a few of the standard PT blade carrier to fit the Briggs motors with the ear type boss by pressing the ear section in my press.
Thanks Norm, I wasn't sure if the ears/wings made things a bit different. Makes sense as I have never seen a PT with that boss
MF, I remember hearing that if you made a flat plate (or bought the ch86221a part and attached it) for where the later catch only models have a ch85217a angled ramp (right inside near height adjuster) then the mulch block would fit. Refer parts diagram
I came across an oddball Victa blade carrier last week, it was on a Victa with one of those 550E or similar, that I just don't bother with. It was round and quite a bit smaller in diameter, haven't seen one like it before.
MF , I haven't seen a Sprinter with a Chonda on it, they all have Briggs, I had one of the later ones with the OHV motor on it but I just binned that motor, they seem to be complete junk so I don't bother with them, straight to the scrap The Sprinters keep getting referred to as a Victa Sprinter but I have not seen any proof of that but the fact they are all fitted with Briggs motors means it is a probability
Your question has no doubt been answered, but I have had two early 2000s Commandos with mulch discs and my last of the line Commando (~2017) has one as well. All are 18" cut.
I don't collect mowers. I just require Multiple Mowing Solutionsâ„¢.
Thanks for the info. Plenty to chew over. I actually saw a Commando for sale the other day, with the plug, catcher, etc in great condition and rang the guy up, but it was already gone for $80. I might see if that plate, so something like it, would be an easy fit.
Mystyler, I thought the last Commandos were 19 inch models. That is news to me. There are so many models of Victas around, it can get confusing trying to track down the right model, and you have engines with shorter shafts, longer shafts, etc etc...
Thanks Tyler, I guess that proves it but it was pretty obvious they were trying to hide the Victa name on it. Sapper, Not too confusing the only long shaft motors were fitted on the 19 inch Tornados and they were a bit on the thin side when it came to the bodywork
Yes Norm, I agree they were trying to make it less obvious. I suppose they were trying to sell the victa vantage ultralite 16in at same time for $369 - all identical aside from paint and up turn handles. And the wheels
Sprinters were $225, down to $150 occasionally I think.
