It's has 03 on the top side of the barrel. Looks like it has been sitting outside since 2003.... The blade has rust but is sharp.....
Fuel tank full of water, maybe the kids were practicing refueling......................
I checked the spark, good spark after I wire brished the flywheel.
Cleaned carb..... bit of a job, hard part was the builtin tap...
Put it together and IT FIRED with starter....... then just turned over...
I took the coil off and sanded the faces,, set the gap to 10 th.. no spark.... maybe coil is shot..... it worked before. I'll take flywheel off but I don't think there is anything under it to clean.....
I'd like to get it going..........

Hi speedy, carby looks trashed, look inside the inlet port and see if there looks to have been water in there, if not it might be ok with a new carby. Been in the weather for a long time because the red plastic is that faded. I was impressed with these motors once I got rid of the bar blade and fitted a round carrier and fitted them to a decent chassis

G'day Speedy and NormK,

I honestly thought it was a light grey version. That plastic must be degraded from that amount of exposure. I guess a freebie is a freebie.
I would at least find a better chassis for it if you get the engine going ok and try to use a blade disc with swing back blades to make it worth while.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Wow Speedy, that is one ugly duckling, but i think we've all seen worse. Nevertheless if you get it going, just like the others said, the engine can be fitted to just about anything else.

AS far as the Chonda motors go I think the Sanli ones are probably the better ones

Speedy I know how you feel, I am having the exact problem with a genuine honda - sometimes it goes first pull, sometimes no spark, sometimes faint, sometimes perfect, sometimes backfires

I read this morning that honda allow gap between .008 inch to .024. Can't get the damn flywheel off either to get a good look at the key.

They are a good engine though and on a Victa base would be much nicer to use

Quite interesting - I had gapped the coil down to 11 thou yesterday without improvement. I just went out and gapped it down to 9 thou - just above Honda's min spec

Fired and ran first pull on choke, then ran like a new one - also threw one of these platinum plugs in https://www.repco.com.au/en/parts-s...-plugs/bosch-spark-plug-wr8dp/p/A9340193 .

Apparently less voltage is required with platinum plugs - maybe it helped. But I had the same one in there yesterday at 11 thou coil gap and made no difference to a copper plug

Bought 20 odd as they were the right price on clearance - hope they are $1 over east as well

Speedy, I hope yours goes the same way

Tyler,
They are platinum plugs they were worth a fortune years ago, that is why they came up with the iridium plugs because iridium was cheaper so they were cheaper to manufacture

I got the flywheel off, put bar in vice, light enough to lift..... Flywheel came off with a couple of taps with a hammer wit the nut on.....
All clean under there, not much under, keyway was good.
I put a carb off and old chonda that didn't work, but this worked.....using the govner linkages below...... I think I'll just set the revs and mow.
Need to put a snorkel on it somehow..... did an oilchange with the warm oll, put some Moreys oil treatment in.....
It runs so smooth and quiet......
I'm happy with it so far.

Speedy, if you really want to find out how good these motors are fit a round blade carrier to it, big improvement

Made a snorkel,, bit bodgie. It starts with starter spray down the snorkel.
The height adjustment is simple, 3 positions. mine set to middle and I'm leaving it there.
Yes Norm, I have a few disks laying around. Does it fit regular disk or do you have to machine it out?

Hi Speedy,
you need to change the blade boss to the one that suits the round carrier. The Briggs ones are just a tad loose but they seem to work ok, the keyway gets them tight, otherwise one from a Honda is the best option

speedy if you used one with a real blade carrier you would never make a statement like that, the bar blades on those are complete junk
