This has probably been discussed in depth here somewhere but can anybody tell me how this gear is removed. I believe the nut will be threaded and I'm guessing it should be a right hand thread but it doesn't seem to want to move. Any advice appreciated and will make Phil happy.

G'day Norm
I can't quite see which sprocket this is.

If it's the rear roller sprocket, and there is no key-way, it will be
a LH thread. If there is a key-way, it will be RH.

Hope this helps

Hi Jack,

Thanks for that, it is the roller drive sprocket, there is a keyway there but I haven't seen the rest of it so I'm not sure how it all works. Tightening RH seems to be locking the sprocket up, LH does loosen the sprocket a little so it allows the sprocket to spin but that is all I have been able to achieve.

G'day Norm
LH threads are only used if there is an engineering purpose.

I now suspect that rear roller sprocket tells another story.

If there is a landroll clutch (two clutches on the mower),
then that would explain a LH thread on the roller.

My guess is that a dog clutch (within the chaincase) acts
on this sprocket. This has been removed (in your image).

When free-rolling (disengaged), a LH thread would be needed
to stop the sprocket from undoing.

These are just thoughts - as I have no parts list for the A-V.
But I do have a hint - from an old eBay sale ...

Hello Seafordphil
That image helps a lot!

It does confirm a secondary clutch on this A-V.

My best guess is that this dog clutch was secured by
a regular RH bolt (bottom right), but the sprocket nut had accordingly
a left hand thread to prevent unscrewing in disengaged mode.

Maybe ...

Nothing is certain here, but I feel Norm will help
others in understanding the A-V final drive.

I wish I had the answer, but information is scarce.

Hi Jack,

Thanks again for your help, as I only have what you can see in the first pic it is a little hard for me to understand how the drive actually worked, but hopefully we will get it sorted out.

Hi Phil,

What do you think our next move should be, my 1150nm rattle gun is not making any impression on it.

Hi Phil,

I was thinking about it last night and my son could turn up a wooden rear roller to fit inside your existing drum to strengthen it up. Just a thought.
