I remember reading that over in NZ, the govt tariff on petrol is higher, but the car rego cost is lower. Idea is to 'tax' those who use roads more (who use more petrol). Probably not popular with people with great off road fuel uses (generators, tractors, etc). Might be exclusions, etc.

Rego over here in WA has gone past $700 per year for run of the mill Camry's, which is pretty steep. At least with the NZ method of extra price on petrol, you pay progressively, and not in one huge hit.
They probably end up getting more in the long run though.

15% ethanol isn't going to end well - especially with people who fill the 10l mower fuel can once a year.
