I am having the same issue at present with a Victa Mayfair Deluxe I bought off gumtree. The previous owner said it was running in the past but had stopped. I found it had plenty of spark. So I cleaned the plug and got fuel going through the tickler. After a few false starts I got it to run. Sometimes it will idle back, but most times it just takes off like a jet and keeps over-revving even when the control lever is pushed to "Slow" position. If you take it down any further it just stops.

Is this the same problem? I am completely new to Victa.

Also can anyone please tell me, what is the correct spark plug for the Victa Mayfair, and what is the correct gap for plug and points? I am using a 25:1 fuel/oil ratio plus a bit extra oil to accommodate for the age and wear. The engine does not smoke at all, which I take as a good sign(?). I recall a relative had one of these and it smoked worse than an old steam train. After mowing the lawn your clothes smelled like you had just been fighting a bushfire.
