Hi Sparker I have never really discovered the reason they work like that, pretty much just design issues, I don't even bother starting them without putting one of my modified carbys on and then they work fine with full throttle control. It is quite a bit of work but it means you can run these Victas for many years to come and not have it over-rev and you can set it to idle at a nice tickover which is probably how they should have been. They fitted an idle adjust on the G4's but it was dropped when they went to the LM's. As for the myths about air leaks causing the problem that is what it is, a myth. I have never bought a new "O" ring for the manifold and have probably only swapped a couple that had been damaged with second hand "O" rings from other motors. I have no idea how many of these Victas I have put back into service, and very few ever come back with a problem and most of the problem ones were before I was able to get the new type float needles
I have also fitted LM carbs to a number of the Victa 24 slashers replacing the old G3 carbs and they are all working exceptionally well with no problems whatever. At first I was pulling the old barrel and fitting the G4 type barrels but I have fitted a number of LM's to the spigot type barrel and they are working fine.
