The engine normally turns CW to start, but it can start CCW (in reverse) and pull back the starter cord & damage the pull starter pulley (cracking it), and worst pull your fingers/hand back into the engine. This is because it needs to have the spinning motion (centripetal force) of the blades/blade holder plate in the right direction (CW) to start.
