I am not sure what you mean by the question "direct drive or gear drive" can you please elaborate and I will take a look and see... btw the pull is on the right hand side when you are standing behind it as a matter of fact you have to take the rewind assembly off to get the chain on or off

I am getting the impression that I am speaking with mechanics that have worked with these saws because the knowledge here is definitely exceeding mine. I have worked on chain saws a bit before but had never really done much to this one. the chain became damaged when it got overtightened and the fuel line that goes between the pickup/filter assembly and the fitting on the tank I tried get it out to check the filter and it just snapped, unfortunately it rolled into the far corner of tank and would not move so I ended up taking the top of the tank off.
