A gear drive saw is one that uses a reduction drive between the engine and thedrive sprocket and reduces the speed of the chain by usually 3to 1 ratio. This gives the saw great power when cutting thru thick bark on larger type of trees. It requires physical effort on the part of the user as these saws do not self feed into the tiber like a well sharpened direct drive saw.
A direct drive saw is one which has the cluch and sprocket mounted direct;y on to the end of the engine crankshaft and hence the name Direct drive. I have taken some pics of the saw I have which is a Gear Diive. If you cab supply an email address I can send some pics ..Joe Brown
