Blasting Cabinet - on the cheap MK1

Made this up from stuff I picked up off the side of the road (mostly) and an old oil tank/parts washer which was left at the property.

Works ok (with some obvious flaws, granted), but lucky I found the fan & ducting for TOXIC dust extraction out of the shed, via the roof spinner! I also had to put a ceiling fan speed controller on the fan, as I could hear the grit going out as well as the dust!

The gun is some offcut of Delron acetal (tough nylon), drilled out and jammed on an air duster; but the pick up tube length and size is not helping. Works much better as a bag/pot gun with the black pick up tube being a garden poly dripper riser.

The window glass is out of an old oven and could have used the whole door, but it had an etched painted outer glass..

What did it cost?.....a few tek screws, 2 hinges and an air duster really the rest was left overs and road side finds, oh and a tub of NORTON grit from supercheap. It did take about a day to make and test/modify as well.

It uses A LOT OF AIR! as they do... a toolex 15S doesn't keep up with it! might have to twin up with the cheapy air comp as well....

Dont be afraid to make one up yourself, keep your eyes open on the road verges & have a go!
cheers

That is awesome and after this move I think I'm going to take some pages from your book and make something similar.

Love your work.

Had something similar in mind. Have a few bits here stashed away. Wanted it Big enough to hold a fullsize motorbike frame.
Was going to have to be a free standing outdoor job, so needs to be water tight.
Might get too it one day.

That's really a great job! Does your comment mean that sand blasting dust is toxic as well as abrasive?

Hi ronn,
Thanks mate! smile Yes it is/can be toxic, (depending on what your blasting and your abrasive) as it carries minute particles of of rust, metal, paint, oil, carbon and burnt fuel/oil residues from heads, (old ones have lead from leaded fuel as well) as well as degraded abrasive which will enter your lungs and lead to a condition similar to asbestosis, (silicosis) if the cancer causing particles in the above dont get you first! As with all things like this, it comes back a lot to exposure over time the more exposure the greater danger. So to control the Exposure Hazard several engineering controls have been put in place eg. the boxed in "cabinet" and the extraction fan to carry away and disperse the dust outside and provide a draw of fresh air around me.

This is the Mark 1 version, I have used it for about ~ 4 hrs. really it needs better gloves and a few leaks sealing up around the joints to really finish it off. Also cutting off the air duster end probably was not the best move, as it lowers the air speed and raises the air consumption..I have been toying with a dust trap/filter in one end idea... but in the too hard basket for the mo..
