Hi BB Yes I am trying to keep it fairly original! Not going to be 100% true to form but it is not going to be a flamboyant gaudy machine!!! Blasting painting and welding was done by limitless blasting it was his first mower done and he charged me $450 for both mowers. I am pretty happy with the results he painted everything even what we had spoke about leaving but I will work around that! He had to re blast reels as painted green also and overspray on rollers. One catcher has just been blasted and painted but has a few pin holes which is slightly frustrating don’t know what I’m going to do about that! I when it comes to the rebuild does anyone use loctite or similar on nuts and bolts I’m sure I read somewhere to not but can’t find post again?
Cheers Ollie

As far as using Loctite is concerned I don't see any reason to use it at all. Nothing requires ridiculously heavy handed tension on it when doing all fasteners up.
I think you'll find that leaving the roller frames green will look really strange with the green being over bearing. I'd strip the green off and repaint them silver to make it look like it's been zinc plated, but hey !, that's me.
Cheers, BB.

Hi BB Thanks I did think I had read somewhere about not using it!! I will prob strip one of them as want to be as original as poss but the other I may leave and see how it looks as going to be black on green!
I have read in another post about oiling pawls what do you do just soak before fitting? As I can’t see any being retained! Is this just to stop the onset of rust? Is it worth a spray with rust reno? Also he has sprayed the inside of ratchet housing I have read that it is optional to paint but will this effect operation?
As long as the paint doesn't restrict any movement it'll be fine. Generally none of the internals of a rear roller were ever painted and as such these have lasted how long ?
I'm sure unpainted they'll last another lifetime, but just douse it all in light oil during assembly..
Cheers, BB.

Well has been super slow progress due to new baby and in-laws visiting!! But on final stretch just got to get the reels off to grinders! Then decide on engines think one is going new Briggs and the other will have a reconed briggs which will be next task!! I kinda regret not doing the body work on the catchers as I just thought they are going to get bashed up but kinda spoils the whole new look! Got next 2 lined up already tho I may just tackle 1 don’t quite know why I did the 2 at once!!! 1 was supposed to be a donar but was too good! Doh Will post some final pics soon hopefully
Looking good! Is the paint a bit metallic? I’d love to see it in the sun. Good on you for bringing the second machine back rather than using it as a donor. With the availability of parts, you could just about bring every model 45 back to life, regardless of the condition.
Thanks guys no not metallic just a very nice green! IMO! Yes I was just going to build the solid for myself but couldn’t leave the twin to rot as I didn’t actually need much off it in end! So it joined in the fun! Will be selling the twin eventually hopefully to help fund my 17” solid which is waiting in line!!! Once I have engines sorted!
Hi BB That’s a good question, personally I like the look of the solid deck, plus then there is the older more elusiveness (tho there dosnt appear to be much of a shortage) and I know that they are all prone to fractures but the solid obviously has the better strength. I also like the fact it keeps more muck out from getting on the underside when I stripped both mowers the solid was definitely less built up whether this is due to being better maintained I don’t know but it makes sense that less oil and grass crud is going to get underneath. Other than that there is really little difference they are just as good as one another.
Personally I have always felt that with the bent lower handle bar and the twin rail appearance that the Series II machine was the better looker. It just looks far more modern while the Series I machine looks far more dated like the Model 33 does.
Yes the Series I is far stronger in the engine deck department but now with these newer style engines out there there will be absolutely no problem in the twin rail design if any fractures are just conventionally repaired as the gusset method isn't really required for those when repaired correctly.
The gusset repair method will really only be required on machines with catastrophic rail failure.
The one thing the early units have over the later and that is torsional strength in the larger two formats, that being the 17 and 20 inch variants. There should be nothing in it for the two 14 inch models.
Cheers, BB.
