Hello to everyone. I hope all is well.

I have had these SB mowers for about 12 years now.

As they have been used quite a lot over those years I think it is about time to restore them back to their new state for the next 12 years.

Any information on any or all of these would be greatly appreciated.

I use 450589 for mowing with 8 blade, 09205 is now converted to a groomer and the 590 is in the process of restoration.

I know that the parts for the 590 are like finding hens teeth but I am quite confident that I can restore this as all of the parts are there.

The 590 has an aluminium gear in very good condition.

I hope the photos have appeared as I am not too sure how to do this as some old engineers a just plain dumb.

Regards

Arty

Hi Arty,

I'm not quite sure what sort of ID that you are looking for as those tags won't give us any actual dates of manufacture. All I can currently tell you is that they were all made in Adelaide at the Holland Street, Thebarton Factory. Some actual photos of the machines themselves would be of greater help.

Cheers,
BB.

Thanks for the quick reply BB
As you asked I have taken more photos and added them to this post.
The information I am looking for is are they original engines, and about what year they were built.
Regards
Arty

Hi Arty,

I'd say that the 590 and the first 45 are still sporting their original power plants, (April 1977 and September 1978 respectively) while the 3rd machine has definitely had a new Briggs I/C engine fitted.

In saying the above I'm not quite sure why you're actually playing with the 590 as you've got two of the best domestic reels mowers ever made and thus the 590 will be more fuss than it's financially worth.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi BB,

The reason behind the 590 is that it was my fathers who is now passed. I would like to get it up and running just for sentimental reasons.

I have all the parts to put it back together and I think it would be cool for some of the younger people out there to see one in as original condition.

Maybe my son will want to use it one day who knows?

I will keep you posted with the progress if you like.

As for the other two, I was thinking of stripping them down and replacing just about everything, new paint etc.

Regards
Arty

Hi,

Its a pity you are not a bit closer to me. I have a complete 590 that used to work I'm trying to give away. That seems to be the consensus of what they are worth.

All the best
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

You're absolutely spot on with that observation. Like I've always said not everything with the Scott Bonnar name is worth big bucks.

The craze is purely all about the Model 45 and nothing else.

Cheers,
BB.

Hi Jeff,

I am fortunate enough to be able to manufacture any parts that need replacing.

I am fully aware of the value of the 590/430s but as some say if you can then then why not.

Regards,
Arty

Hi Bonnar Bloke,

As I said in my earlier post, this is a sentimental journey for me and the 590.

My Dad loved this machine and I look at it and I remember him mowing the grass with the biggest smile on his face.

The value of this mower is of no consequence as I will never sell it.

Some people think that this mower is not much good, but I think it has it's place among all the others.

The rear catcher is quite useful in tight gardens and is fairly safe to use.

The servicing is a little difficult but not too bad.

Some say the 590/430s are ugly, but to some they are just as beautiful as a 45.

Regards
Arty

Sentimental reasons certainly outweigh financial benefits and if that's what someone wants who am I to oppose that as I totally understand.

Not everything in this world is about money I've always said.

Cheers,
BB.
