I cut the nature strip and a strip of long grass inside a former bowing club converted into a fly by night looking function centre and it has been over a week since I did the job after approaching a guy I saw in the club gounds. We agreed on a modest price as it didn't include edging or leaf blowing. Just mowing and dumping the clippings in the bushes. I could really have done it for free to be honest but he did agree to a price and said he would meet me the next day to pay me but it became dark by the time I finished and the weekend was coming up, so I didn't want to bother him at dinner time so left a text to say the job was done. On Monday.I called him and he said he was busy and couldn't meet me and asked why I didn't call him that day. When I explained why he said for me to leave my bank deposit details by text. Almost a week later and the money hasn't arrived. Should I just let it go or chase him further. I really don't mind having done it for free but it still bothers me that I have not got the agreed payment. What do you think?

Hey MF,
Gone are the days where a handshake agreement was a binding deal.
My opinion, leave it, If he asks you to do it again, then ask for payment up front plus amount still outstanding for previous cut.
I work in a trade industry (plumbing) where jobs are completed and invoices are sent out to customers. I hear many, many stories of the grievances caused from the little guys chasing money. As sad as it is to say, it is simply not worth it these days.
Just my opinion mate, good luck and make sure to let us know the outcome. Hopefully just an honest mistake on there part.

Hi MF,
Sadly it's the way of the world now. People try anything to get out of something without paying.
Cheers, BB.

Lots of grubs out there, he probably won't pay and buy the time it needs cutting again, the fact it was long in the first place is proof they don't care what the place looks like, he will have forgotten your number so you will not get the satisfaction of telling him to get stuffed

G'day Mowerfreak,
Just try ringing him or meeting with him again (don't send a text, better to talk to him on the phone or meet him in person). Just say I want to double check and make sure that you got my bank deposit details correct as I still haven't received any payment into my account for the lawnmowing.
See what his response will be, also it will remind him that you are still waiting for the payment.
Don't know mate it's worth a try.
Cheers!

+1 for what Converse said.
Keep a level head and don't accuse him of reneging on the deal.
Failing that give me his number and I'll help.

Hi all, I'm not the greatest at phone calls and there was something about this bloke that didn't sit well with me, like a sixth sense if you will. I'd rather leave the ball in his court now. Appreciate the advice guys.

Hi everyone,
I gave him a reminder call and he said he will send it this afternoon after claiming he'd been away for a few days and "forgot". His tone at end of the call didn't sound encouraging though, as he practically let out a sigh before I hung up!
Thanks for your help.

He sent me a text to get my account name, then sent another to confirm it was done, but it hasn't arrived at my end . I guess there is still a delay with electronic transactions. It seems the reminder did the trick.

Bank to bank is not instant unless you're both with the same one.
Have a look in the morning and report back.

Hi MF
Every time I've had money transferred it takes up to 24 hours to show up in the account .
A lot of online sellers won't send the item until the money clears.
I would not check the transaction until tomorrow.
Max.

I agree that an handshake on a deal means nothing now. In the past a man's word and a hand shake was his bond. That is how I was raised; that I was to honor my word.
I had to change with the times here too. I no longer let repairs out on partial payment as they seldom if ever finis paying their bill. At I tried to get at least the parts paid for the release. That policy has changed to full payment before release and they pay within a reasonable time I sell their equipment to recover the repair bill.
I had one those guys show up wanting me to do another repair for him after 18 months. I required him to pay the last bill first before even starting the new repair job. He also knows that he causes this policy change as he has been informed that he will need pay in full to get his mower back.

G-day all, The payment arrived at my end and the bank balance looks all the nicer for it. I'd like to thank all who responded and gave their suggestions on how to approach this situation for an amicable outcome. I was prepared to let it go but glad to have posted it up here to get more opinions and ideas . ODK saves the day again.

Great news Mowerfreak.
Money is too hard to come by these days to let it slip through your fingers.
