MF about preventing rust if you go ahead: i agree with wce- in my experience, Lanotec does inhibit the spread of existing rust on mild steel panels, as well as prevent its appearance in the first place. I've used their General Purpose lanolin product. (Old bikes and cars)

WD40 is mainly kero and oil (I think). Anyway, in my experience it's not very effective protection against condensation. Your Gear oil would be way more viscous so provided your engine not stored under the house in snow country (like mine), I'd guess it should work ok for at least a couple of years.

ACF 50 is a superior, aviation industry use inhibitor. Lot of bikers use it (eg for riding in UK winters- rain, snow, mud & salty roads). Has really good tenacity in adverse conditions, and is durable. You could use this stuff on your engine even if you want to use your PT for work- won't bake on/burn off your cast iron casings and barrel fins, or alloy head like gear oil. Dunno about the exhaust though. Not cheap, but brush-on and I've found a little goes a LONG way.

I bet London to a brick that no one will get any of these 3 engines at $100 each, because as soon as someone bids they will be mysteriously outbid within minutes and have the price run up and up and if it doesn't reach $250 it will be again the owner that holds the winning bid until it reaches that high wanted figure.

Still a lot cheaper than $600 and would make a great transplant on one of my thumb latch bodies.

I can't see why anybody would buy a new one, put a set of rings in one and it is good for years, $100 maybe but that would be about tops, be interesting to see how it goes.

When new, you only have to pull the rope 1/2 way if that and it starts. They mostly don't do that as they age.

No reason why they won't start with half a pull, particularly when they have new rings and a sorted carby

I was going to chime in on this one but Norm just beat me to it.

As Norm suggested with a good set of rings there's absolutely no reason why it would fire on half a pull. It's the fact that we're all used to Victa's with half worn rings that require a brisk full pull of the recoil starter rope.

I think it's time for my first foray into honing and ring replacement. Where can I get a suitable hone?

I am considering the same thing MF, going to put a new piston (worn where gudgeon is) in a very nice Sunbeam Lawnkeeper 160.

At sca, there is a big hone for $74,
or a small one for $28.

The big one will do down to 50mm, a 125cc is 53mm. 160cc is about 62mm from memory.

So I suppose it is a matter of deciding if a larger one is worth it for any other uses like motor bikes or car engines

I’ve been considering a full rebuild for some time myself, I know a tool maker who can bore a couple of badly scored blocks for me. There are a few places online where you can buy ball type/flex hones for around the $80 mark. I guess it would cost me about $150 all up for the hone, oversized piston, rings etc. but would be a great project and I would know what I’m getting at the end of it

I got a couple of new sets of stones for my hone yesterday this time I went for the 100mm ones and they are nice and thick, should be able to do a lot of cylinders with these. If you are going to get a hone be careful, most of the ones on ebay only have 50mm long stones and when you are using it the stones can drop into the transfer ports so the min stones you can use are 75mm long, not easy to find but you should be able to pick one up for the mid $30 range

I can only say I am gobsmacked, but I guess in here we get used to just rebuilding a motor and give it little thought apart from the fact it has cost you a set of rings or a pull starter or whatever.

Jmagine if anyone had 3 brand new Holden 308 Engines to put up on eBay one by one.............wouldn't we all watch them fly to dizzy heights ?

I can't imagine what it would cost to rebuild a 308 these days, haven't had one of those rebuilt for probably 25 years and back then it cost me a couple of thousand dollars

Try tripling that now and that's just for a standard variant.

The second Brand New PT finished up at $172.50 which is far less than the previous listing with the BIN fixed price which fetched $250.

I expect the third unit to be listed at the original $250 BIN figure again.
