Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has come across this beast before. I picked it up at the local Tip shop in the hope of repairing or using for parts. I originally thought the dive for the wheels was cactus but on examination under deck I noticed that the plastic gear cover had broken and was preventing the blade from turning on startup. I am about to start basic service to see if the engine works, but typically I didn't take a photo of the setup before disconnecting the controls. Altzheimers has set in and I can't for the life of me remember how they went. Searched the web for hours trying to locate manual or parts diagram but no joy. I have posted photos to show what it looks like. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi rollo, that deck looks in good nick, unfortunately the drive components not as good.
I have never seen a drive shaft come directly out the side of a motor before. What happened to the pulley attached? It looks like it has been bashed by a frustrated would be repairer. It looks like a straightforward easy to get at self propel system.
I hope you can get it going as it looks like an impressive mower once going.

Ahh, if only victa had kept producing the thumblatch catcher series, they would be in better shape today!

Hi Rollo, it is just a bog stock Briggs, haven't come across one with a drive out the side but obviously Briggs made them. Doesn't look like it has a fuel tank on it? Firstly see if it runs, remove the belt just to be safe.It was fitted with an engine brake but that has been removed, the kill switch wire is still hanging there on the right hand side.Once you have refitted the fuel tank, open the throttle a little bit, just move the lever on top of the carby, and give it 3 primes on the primer, look in the top of the carby to make sure it is squirting fuel in, then you should be able to start it (hopefully), Before you do this make sure it has oil in it, sometimes they have been run dry and if this is the case it usually not worth the effort of getting it running

Yes just like horizontals they made verticals with camshaft PTOs. I only seen a couple verticals myself. On horizontals the secondary PTO was primarily used for reverse operations on garden roto tillers and on verticals primary for self propelled mowers. I glad that idea didn't last long as it was hard on the camshaft gear train. Most OEMs have gone to a gearbox driven off the crankshaft.

The last time I needed a camshaft for one it was NLA so the customer just opted for a new self propelled mower. Walk behind mowers here as a dying breed as most operators in rural areas are buying riders and using sting trimmers. I still see for sale in urban areas though as those owners have tiny patches of lawn.

Rollo hopefully you got the engine's shroud as it will have the needed engine model and type numbers for parts look up.

Hi All,
Thanks for getting back to me. I was about to post a reply and realized that I could use the B&S codes to identify the beast. From the codes on the shroud I was able to ascertain that it was manufacture in July 18 1989 at plant 28. It is a 11 cubic inch displacement basic design 0 with a vertical shaft, plain bearing with aux drive (PTO) perpendicular to the crank and rewind starter. So its older than I thought. The motor seems OK except for a leaking lower crankcase seal and oil breather tube. I originally thought it seized but after removing the brake I was able to rotate the Fly with no grinding and the pulley moved. As said in the original post I need to find a picture or diagram showing how the controls go together. I can hopefully start it first and see if it is worthwhile proposition other than that its parts. It would be nice to get going as it is a bit bigger that the chondas I have been using to mow my paddock while I'm getting around to fixing the ride-ons I have. As mentioned in the replies newer models have the PTO driving the front wheels with the drive mechanism under deck and off the bottom of the crank.
